2009 Will Eisner Awards - Manga Nominees
The biggest awards in the US comic industry have just announced this years nominees and manga pop up in several categories beyond the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Japan category. Let's take a look!

Quote:
Best Continuing Series

All Star Superman, by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely (DC)

Fables, by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha, Niko Henrichon, Andrew Pepoy, and Peter Gross (Vertigo/DC)

Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, by Naoki Urasawa (Viz)

Thor, by J. Michael Straczynski, Olivier Coipel, Mark Morales, and various (Marvel)

Usagi Yojimbo, by Stan Sakai (Dark Horse)

Monster popped up in the same category last year, hopefully it will this time around but with All Star Superman and Fables it's got some very stiff competition.

Best Publication for Kids

Amulet, Book 1: The Stonekeeper, by Kazu Kabuishi (Scholastic Graphix)

Cowa! by Akira Toriyama (Viz)

Princess at Midnight, by Andi Watson (Image)

Stinky, by Eleanor Davis (RAW Junior)

Tiny Titans, by Art Baltazar and Franco (DC)

My money's on Cowa! or Princess at Midnight. Andi Watson's a fantastic creator and actually one I do my best to follow, but I have to admit that I haven't checked out Princess at Midnight yet. Still, his name is quality and his past works are always fantastic.

Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books

Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*! by Art Spiegelman (Pantheon)

Creepy Archives, by various (Dark Horse)

Elektra Omnibus, by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz (Marvel)

Good-Bye, by Yoshihiro Tatsumi (Drawn & Quarterly)

Herbie Archives, by “Sean O’Shea” (Richard E. Hughes) and Ogden Whitney (Dark Horse)

I'm afraid I haven't really read any of those, but I do recognize several names and I think Good-Bye has got its work cut out for it. I'd expect it to go Spiegelman, but only time will tell.

Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Japan

Cat Eyed Boy, by Kazuo Umezu (Viz)

Dororo, by Osamu Tezuka (Vertical)

Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, by Naoki Urasawa (Viz)

The Quest for the Missing Girl, by Jiro Taniguchi (Fanfare/Ponent Mon)

Solanin, by Inio Asano (Viz)

And that's the big manga category. Very good selection this year and, outside of The Quest for the Missing Girl, I've heard fantastic things about every manga there. I just haven't heard anything about The Quest for the Missing Girl. At this point I'd have to call it a crap shoot. I'd like to see Dororo get it, just because Vertical could use the recognition and the praise, but I'd love to see an Umezu horror title get the win too.

At any rate there it is, the manga nominees for the 2009 Eisner Awards. The winners will be announced at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con which takes place later this summer.
