A rich aristocrat passing through has his life saved by one of the guide/guard robots and in return gives him a most unusual gift. A nameless female attendant, who is his slave. She is to serve the robot now. The aristocrat is amused to do so.
the robot reports immediately to his superiors, who send him up the chain of command until the chain of command until he reaches the mayor of the station.

The mayor demands he hand the girl over but in a rare flash of obstinance he releases the girl instead. She is free now to decide what she wants to do with her life.

He sees the girl again the next day, wondering alone and dispirited. She comes up to him and starts a conversation.

At this stage he is still very must automated. His speech is full of designation this and that. His designation or name is G B 8-00 of the A 500 series. The girl takes in Gebo and that's about it. That's how she thinks of him from here on out.

She has no name and little money so she hires him to take her on a tour of the city with the last of it and to chose a name for her. He chooses Mirai.

And they find a maid club that is hiring. Since she was raised as a slave she has no trouble with the manner required to fit in. They also find her a cheap little flat.
