Of The Elements: Book One: Origin
Prologue: The girl in the temple
She carried her magical rod in her hands, clutched closely to her. It was like the very thing keeping her on this earth. She was in a temple of lore, the temple of summoning. This place was supposed to lead to the realm of summon spirits, creatures who are bonded to those who claim them by incantations. They could take all kinds of forms, from a fish to a God-like creature. Most do not travel here unless they are of summoner's
descent. With this girl, that was the case. These family's have familiars- a particular summon spirit they call upon based on their lineage. Special family's could call upon a summon spirit with several forms. There was only one known of who could achieve this-Runae. He was an outcast summon spirit- but I loved him already. I knew he was kind, gentle, strong, and loyal- that was enough for me. That's why I'm risking my life in this dangerous temple full of vicious monsters- to see Runae. I know it sounds absurd, but then again, you don't know me, and that's ok. My name is NiaChi Runette, as I was named by my parents. I had a happy life with my parents- until the attack of the rouge summon spirit. The creature had a demonic-dog look to it, which meant trouble. It is assumed to be a summon spirit gone mad because very little is known about it. This beast has been killing more and more people- and I intend to stop that. By acquiring Runae as my familiar, I will be very powerful. I walk through the temple without trouble- for I have used a sleeping spell to put to sleep all the monsters in the temple- not even a bomb could awaken them. I still look cautiously around me, for fear of hidden surprises. And, as fate would have it, I stumble right into one, a spike pit! I think my life is over...but then I am lifted out of the pit in something warm. It is a beast- nay, a summon spirit! My eyes see Runae for the first time, a majestic dog-like creature the likes of which you have never seen. His fur is cyan-green, which is the first thing you notice about his majesty. The second would be his eyes, the golden light of their coloring
seems to draw you in. I stare at this beast, my mouth wide-open. The aura surrounding this spirit was immense and powerful. I knew I had to posses him, I just had to. I stood up from my spot on the ground, and bowed to this magnificent beast. “Hello, fair spirit, my name is Niachi, and your name is?” I already knew his name, but I needed to see if he knew it. “Miss, my name is Runae, I am the summon spirit of Origin. I have many different forms, and the being, human or mostly, lucky enough to posses me shall be very powerful indeed.” I smiled at him, and he smiled at me. I could tell I had every right for me to ask him to be mine, but....”Runae, how dare you leave your charge?!” Said a rather annoyed looking wolf-like summon spirit rushing towards us. I got the hint, Runae was already someone else's. It hit me hard, I had looked forward to obtaining Runae, and having a friend. Since my parents died, I had no one. This was disappointing news, but I didn't intend to give up. At this point in my thoughts, the wolf opened his mouth again to speak “Runae, come with me right now, master is in trouble!” At this, Runae's eyes widened, and he was off. I followed, I had taken a ride on Runae's tail.
I
We hurtled through the darkness, Runae, the wolf, and I. This temple was long, and very deep. I had walked far, this surprised me. I looked ahead of me, but all I saw was Runae's fur. My hands were slipping, the situation was not good. Runae became aware of my presence at this point due to my many grabs at his tail to hold on. He lifted me up onto his back with his hind paws, and there I stayed, gripping his neck fur tightly. The wolf next to Runae suddenly stopped and growled at me. “Runae, you have human on-board, are you aware?” Runae looked at the wolf, then back to me. He smiled at me so tenderly, it warmed my heart. “I am well aware, subordinate, but I do not mind.” The wolf shook his head, frustrated. “But you know how the master feels about humans, he was wounded by them, and...” Runae laid his tail across the subordinates mouth, his expression commanding. “She will come with us, she is a good human, I sense it in her aura.” The wolf shrugged, looking resigned, “fine, you do what you want, Runae, but don't come crying to me when master disciplines you again.” Runae nodded, satisfied, and burst into a run, his powerful legs stretching down to the ground, blessing it with his presence. Soon, we stumbled outside, the sun greeting us warmly. I looked around, I had not seen sunlight for some time, I squinted because it hurt my eyes. Runae followed the wolf to an open field, where the trouble was. There, a massive gory battle was taking place, body parts were strewn across the battle-field. I did not avert my eyes, for I was used to such a scene, sadly. For example, the scene of my parents death. The breath-taking thing was in the middle of the field. I saw a brilliant figure on a sword, stabbed straight through, but the blade glimmered with not his blood but his aura. It amazed me, I saw the blood splatter, but the aura around the sword attracted my eye. That's when I realized that this man was still alive. If your aura still glows, you still live. Runae rushed toward the man, screaming “Master! Master!” The man lifted his hand and stroked Runae's muzzle-this man was part wolf. He looked at me, his eyes hurt for a second, but it was quickly replaced by acceptance. “Runae, I am dieing, and now, I want you to protect this young lady here-” he stopped abruptly and pointed at me “ with my blessing.” The man laid his hand back on the grass limply, as he gazed at the sky. At the sight of Runae, the other warriors ran, they knew something they could not defeat when they saw it. The wolf looked at Runae, his eyes weak. “Runae, as master's soul familiar, I, too, am dying. Master is now speechless, so I will speak the feelings in his heart. Master says he will allow you to be owned by this human, for she is a descendant of a powerful summoner family. He also says he no longer hates humans, and goes to heaven with no regrets after seeing this angelic young lady. He believes you will take great care of her, as you have him, and she you.” The wolf laid down beside his master, his breathing had become very shallow, and less frequent. “Runae...master wants..you..to be..happy.” At these words, the wolf and his master faded, leaving behind a grieving Runae and a girl hugging him comfortingly. There we stood, at the end of Runae's and his previous masters journey, and at the beginning of Runae and I's journey. It was not the end yet, that was a fact. I looked at the birds in the sky, flying and singing their little bird songs cheerfully, the foxes and rabbits running in the field coexisiting, it was not over. II A new novel I've started on, I resolved to finish the prologue- enjoy. heart
