Rantings of a Diseased Mind
All those who read further beware, for your brain shall liquify, drip out your nostrils, and flush itself down the toilet.
White plastic fork of DEATH!
Amazingly enough the title of this entry actually means something, but I don't care to explain myself at the moment. ANYWHO!

I just finished (finally) watching 1408 for the first time. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't true to the short story it's based off of, but it was a good movie none the less. My main complaints are that 1) they changed the ending and 2) the movie lost much of the subtle brilliance of the story. The former bugged me more, because in the story the room won. I didn't like that the main character escaped the room on his own in the movie, instead of succumbing to it's will. As for my other complaint, the movie did tend to get a bit sensational and used shock value instead of paranoia to make the audience uncomfortable. For gods sake, there were even 'ghosts' in the room. That was the worst offense of the movie- the evil of the room should not have taken a human form, because there was nothing human about 1408. The creepiest part of the short story (the insane ramblings on the phone) were only present during a few brief seconds at the end of the movie. The best part of the movie to me was the fact that it completely freaked Mom out. Once it was over she asked me if it ended differently in the book (hoping the ending was nicer). I went into a detailed explanation of what really happened in my beloved fictional hotel room and suggested she read the story. She's been calling our relatives and warning them not to watch it for the last half hour. I doubt she'll ever read that book.

I know that was a long and disjointed rant, but dammit I love Stephen King.

He didn't kill himself, he just did exactly what the room wanted him to do (which was something else but I'll let you read it).
