Jennie and the recent gas prices in the U.S. got me to thinking. One of the biggest arguments against a free market (capitalism) is that capitalism is bad for the environment. With the recent gas prices, however, we may have found an exception.
See, the basic idea of a free market economy is that when supply is low, demand is high. If demand is high enough to make a product attractive, and alternatives exist that both ease the consumers' transition and make up for the cost of conversion, then consumers will seek out the alternative. In the case of petroleum, it seems that the public all of the sudden has an interest in alternative fuels, with Biodiesel getting the most attention of late.
Granted, this is not likely to please the purist environmentalists, as it's essentially incidental environmentalism. Still, should we be campaigning for lower gas prices when simply sitting back and letting the free market take its course would benefit everyone in the long run? I say no... let the prices go up. Let people see that there are
