ABET
Aidan's Brain Emptying Time A fictional gameshow and outlet for my random sh*t.
The most interesting reason to have a favorite word.
Today, while looking for a word beginning with E to use in an abbreviation for a roleplaying game (A collection of Elite government-level response units called the S.E.E.R.S. which in now the Special Elite Estoteric Response Service) I discovered a site called myfavoriteword.com.

Allow me to show you why I find some of this site's stuff to be thoroughly entertaining as a massive fan of the English language:

Explosion.

My favorite word is explosion. It stems from when my son was about 4 years old: I came home from a long workday and he greeted me at the door with his usual big smile and hug. "Daddy, Daddy, on TV today? I was watching this program? And it had this... big... EXPLOSION!" He drew the word out deliciously, putting a wonderfully timed expectant pause between the first two syllables: "ex... PLOOO-sion!" I realized that he had had more fun just saying the word "explosion" than I had had all day. I've always loved the exuberance he put into that word.

Rapscallion.

Meaning "rascal," rapscallion is seldom used nowadays. What I like best is how it is a word best used when imitating a pirate. Try it yourself. You'll see, matey.

Hoodwink.

This word just came to me during a talk with my teenage son when I suspected he wasn't quite telling me the whole truth but didn't want to ask if he was lying. I knew there was a word that wouldn't offend and would allow some humor if I was wrong. I asked him if he was trying to hoodwink me and he just looked at me and started laughing saying that can't be a word. We looked it up in the dictionary and there it was. I vaguely remember it from my childhood but haven't used or heard of it in at least 30 years. As it turned out he had been trying to hoodwink me.

Language is a thing very precious to me. I find that there are a lot of words that come from memories, and yet more words that memories come from when you hear them. So here's to language, and the things it brings out of us.

(P.s. check out myfavoriteword.com, has some really funny stuff)
