Who knew Pop-Tarts were so confusing!
For those who don't know, I'm currently taking a Japanese class. Our student teacher, Nakata-sensei, is a college grad from Osaka, Japan. He's going to spend the year here studying to be an English teacher, and he isn't completely fluent in English yet. Today in class we were learning how to talk about breakfast, and someone asked how to say pop-tarts in Japanese. So Bressman-sensei (the main teacher) turns to Nakata-sensei and says, "Oh, you were just eating one of those!" and Nakata-sensei just looked confused and said, "I wasn't eating breakfast...I had a cookie." "That wasn't a cookie, it was a pop-tart. We eat those for breakfast." "...but it was a cookie." "No...you have no idea what you were eating, do you?" "...the cookie?" We then wound up spending the rest of the hour trying to explain that pop-tarts are not cookies. It was all rather silly rolleyes
