You know, it was bad enough when 2 weeks ago our youngest kitten fell ill over night and died before we could take him to the vet. We felt helpless as we watched him slowly die and it hurt us deeply when he stopped breathing. He was cute and adorable and he had only been with us for a few weeks. We felt like we failed him because we picked him up from the streets and he still did not have a long life span.
But the biggest blow came today. However it had been building up to it. One of our other cats had suddenly stopped eating. It was alarming because she used to steal food from our cupboards and hands. She would even pester me for food when I was cooking. And lastly she would be the first at the food bowls. But then it all stopped. Her behaviour changed. She didn't seem as responsive as before and it scared me and Amy.
We decided to nick this in the butt so we took her straight to the Vet. He said that she was extremely dehydrated and that it may be due to a stomach bug. So, we rehydrated her (at the cost of two of my fingers - her teeth where sharp!) and scheduled to take her back tomorrow.
Later that night, after coming home from work, the first thing we did was check on her. Sadly she had soiled herself so we cleaned her up. It puzzled us as we did not think she was that weak. We then tried to give her some medication but she refused it. She even refused food and water. Then, the alarm went off when she had a sudden seizure in our hands. Never had we seen her have one before. This was an absolute first! And sadly it was not the last. That night we know that she had at least 3. She may have had more before we got home and as we slept.
The next morning we went straight to the Vet. We actually got there first - that's how early we made it. Before we got there, she had 4 more seizures. The Vet witnessed her 5th. He gave us the news. She was most likely struck on the head before she was cast out as a stray. The effects take about 4 weeks to surface. 4 weeks ago was when we found her and took her in.
We couldn't believe it and the worst was yet to come. She had lost all her coordination and motor skills. She was slowly dying. The Vet turned round and gave us the best option - putting her to sleep. The mere thought of it killed us on the spot. But it would have been inhumane to say No. We had to agree and the Vet said we didn't have to stay. He even didn't charge us any fee, which I am grateful because deep down it would have felt that I just paid him to kill her. We said our goodbyes and left her in his hands. I still have a heavy heart and feel like we should have been able to do something different.
Two cats have passed away. Two of our precious family. I just hope that our other two will be alright...
