Near Diving Accident In Gozo (Reqqa Point)
Mistakes Made:
1) He dove a dive site under horrible weather conditions.
2) Attempted to climb ladder with fins still on his feet
3) Did not lock arm around ladder when standing idle.
4) While hanging he tried to fix his mask and hold on with one hand.
Bet you he will learn this time.

The diver in question was infact an instructor with one of the Marsalforn dive centres; thought he was more experienced than he was. He got out ok though. As to it being rough there, yes it can get very rough, but not from calm to that in 50 mins.

On ladder exits like that you need to watch the surf and normally coordinate with a appointed wave watcher on top for "Brace" and "Move" commands. Obviously here there was none.

I dont believe that the sea becomes that rough in a matter of minutes from a calm state, anyway,if that happened then exiting using that ladder is insane.its just asking for trouble going up with all the gear on.

Just ridiculous. You should never dive Reqqa Point in swell like that for exactly that reason. It might be one of the best shore dives on Gozo, but wait until tomorrow when the wind will have changed!

Now that's dangerous. I actually went diving at the same spot last summer, and I still remember that ladder. But even if the guy in the video would have taken his fins off, he could still have been hit by that wave. I'd say keep your regulator in your mouth and keep your BCD inflated until you are safe on land.

Take your fins off before you hit the ladder! You can barely climb a ladder with fins in the best conditions let alone with surf pounding you! Jeez!
