"He's out of pain." Becca looked up from her book. She held out her hand. I took one last glance at the picture of my cousin, and handed it to Becca.
"Don't ya' miss him?" I asked wishing I had kept the picture.
"He's out of pain." Becca repeated.
"That's not what I asked. I asked if you miss him." Becca was looking at the picture. She shut her book and kept looking at it.
"I guess I will. When it finally dawns on me that he's gone." She shoved the picture in her book and got up from the chair. I watched as she walked up the stairs.
"So you're saying you don't?" She stopped when she got to the top. She threw me her poetry book.
"Read the last page." She went into her room and I flipped to the last page.
I saw him enter Heaven
I heard him call my name
I looked at him
He looked at me
And we fell in love
All over again
I heard him call my name
I looked at him
He looked at me
And we fell in love
All over again
I sighed and dropped the book on the coffee table. Becca was my soon to be cousin-in-law. But Clayton died before they could get married. I looked at the book one last time and picked it up and shook it. The picture of Clayton fell to the floor. I threw the book and bent down and grabbed the picture.
"That's all he'll ever be. A still picture. Frozen in time," I looked up towards Becca's room. "A still picture." I repeated slowly looking back at Clay. I could see his sickly face laying on the hospital bed. His eyes darting around the room. Looking for something that could help him, save him.
