Chapter 5

“Lazian?” I heard my name being called, my cursed name. I thought it strange that this boy called my name with such need and pitiful urgency. Did he not realize what a heartless killer I am? Never-the-less I heard my name called again.
“I’m in here Sebastian,” I finally reply with my calm voice, the calm that had chilled my once flaring blood for adventure.
The boy entered the room and looked at me with an embarrassed blush, “Oops, I thought you left me.” I looked at him and he looked at me back not looking away shyly this time.
“No, I’m right here little one,” I assured him curious as to what went on in this human’s head. One moment he was all shy, then the next he was somewhat—goofy. “Did you need something?” I then inquired.
“May we go to the park today?” He asked with a hopeful look.
I opened my mouth about to say no, then I gazed into his eyes and something about the playfully buoyant spirit inside Sebastian tugged at me. “Yes.”
He jumped and smiled widely. It was very amusing I must confess. He had expected me to say no as I usually did, so he was just as surprised as I about the comings from my mouth. “On one condition though,” I added.
“Yes, anything,” he chimed excitedly. I wondered where this happiness came from. He was but a scraggly and sickly kid that lived off the street digging in garbage cans.
“Thou shall practice ye ability when we are done in the park,” he nodded loosing some of the happiness. It was like ice being scorched with hot flames melting off the outer layer of frost. I knew he hated using his talents given by that cursed creature that defiled the lives if everything he touched. Sebastian had no choice however, it was that or death. I could not protect him from everything, though it brought a strange pain to admit so.

I watched Sebastian with a little curiousness as we made our long trek to the park. I could see the happiness about being able to go to the park, but it was tainted with a fear of the outside world. I watched as he flinched every time someone around him made even the slightest of gestures. It was all so very curious, he had the power to destroy them all, maybe not all at once, but he had the power to get it done. Yet, here he was, timid, afraid, and unwilling to use his cursed gift.
“Lazian?” I heard my name on a soft whisper.
“Yes?” Was my simple and dull reply.
“W-why did you choose to help me?” He asked almost reluctantly. Was he afraid of the answer?
I didn’t miss a beat, I didn’t even pause to answer. With my know-sure and stable voice I gave him his answer, “You remind me of Jay.”
“Jay? Who is that?” He asked curiously.
“Jay was my servant. Jay was my companion for over 6 centuries.” Once again my most troublesome mind sent my thoughts to my gallery of memories, oh so many memories. Everything about Jay cam to finger tips, every happy moment along with stressful. I knew I should feel emotion, but I gave that up long ago. Now I’m just cold and alone.
“Your servant?” Sebastian had hints of fright in his voice mixed with that same curiousness that seemed to be sprouting out more and more.
I drew in a breath, “I shall tell of Jay once and that is all.” Why was I telling this boy of my past you may ask. I have asked myself this same question many times. I believe it is because of her. I saw little parts of Clare in him and I could not resist those subtle pulls.
“This is the story of Jay,” I began, “Jay was one of the original vampire lords. It is true, there are vampires, if those defiling creatures can even be rewarded the title, lurking around dark corridors. Many live right in plain sight everyday, never daring to go out in the open yet boasting superiority. I’d kill them all if they would but line up for my slaughter.
Jay was a Lord over them, he was a perfect vampire. He was undiluted as I and possessed the ancient power as I also. During one of the great wars five of the six vampire lords fell to my hand. Jay was newly reborn, for back then the Vampires did not have to feed as these modern petty creatures so dependent on humans. Instead, they grew old for two or three millenniums then were reborn into fresh versions of themselves. So I spared his life and bound him to me. He was one of the few people I actually cared for.
Over the next 600 years he stayed with me and was my servant. That is until the last great war. I unbound him and lost him. I think he died; I can not be for sure though. I lost all but the tiniest portion of my power so I may not search for him. So I have lived the last sixteen thousand years alone.
Jay always favored to play with his power over shadow demons and their domain—no—his domain.”

Sebastian listened and had stopped walking to just stare at me. “Then you chose me because I have the same power as him?” I nodded. “Y-your really that old?” He then asked.
I put on a faint smile, it was a dull replica of a real one, “No,” I reply, “I am much, much older than that. I am older than Jay, and he had gone through six rebirths.”
Sebastian blinked many times. I realized that he had thought me to be only the age I appeared, about the same age as him. That was not the case however, and I believe it unnerved him quite a bit.
“Jay, oh my precious Jay. What befell thee Jay?” I whispered under my breath wondering once again if he was still here with me. My paranoia overthrew my mind’s rationality and traveled to the curious notion that Jay was watching me even now out of sight; always to be my protector, even to the fateful end.
