Chapter 1
The Runaway
She could hear the echo of her chains as she ran as fast as she could through the forest. It had been nearly 4 months since she ran away from her master and they, her master’s men, were still intent on catching her. Soon she just might have to give up and let them take her in because for one, her shackles were becoming too tight and two, her clothes were torn and tattered. The shirt that was far too small to fit her now was a criss-cross shirt; it had been revealing before but now it was even more so. Her boots were showing signs of wear and she was surprised they hadn’t broken yet. Her purple skirt was very tattered and she was lucky to have a pair of shorts underneath it. These violet shorts were the only garments of clothing she had left that still fit her some what. Despite the status of her clothes her hair was in perfect condition. As she ran its dark blue strands weaved a web of color that made her stick out like a sore thumb in the green of the forest. Now, she wouldn’t have to keep running in such conditions had she been any normal slave. On normal terms she should have been able to head north into the Tilac country but, because she wasn’t human she would have to keep running. Forever. Her cat ears twitched a few times. The people chasing her had decided to stop for the night. The sun was painting its colors on the clouds and sky, the orange and pink hues dancing everywhere she looked. She came to a clearing that had a hill gentlely rising almost above the trees but not quite. She could sit on it and rest without worrying about being sighted by her pursuers. And sit down and rest is exactly what she did; all of this running was very tiring and she rarely had time to eat to regain her strength. She sat down on her knees and looked toward to setting sun. How she wished she could disappear like that every so often! Then the next day she could come back with no one around to hurt her and she would be free forever. She shook her head at her own foolish fantasy. She knew it wasn’t safe to be in the forest at this time of the day. There were Nekos like herself but they were completely wild and would try to kill anyone they saw that was not familiar to them. Then you had the classical werewolves that might occasionally cross your path, and of course, that would never end well. She could probably out race those two creatures though, she was really only worried about one particular species of night-killers. They were crafty and had so many legends on how to kill them or escape them that no one was really sure what to do when encountered by one. That was due to no one had ever lived to tell anyone how to survive an encounter with them. This obviously did not include the ones who had been changed themselves. She was worried about running into a Vampire. Thankfully most vampires were no where near where she was. They usually stayed in Sile which was known to be a Vampire city. She was in Obity city; she didn’t have to worry about anything or anyone other than the occasional human that might stumble across her. She closed her eyes and sighed. She would be fine for tonight. Tomorrow she would check the underground system to see if there was a place she could go to from there that was “neko friendly”. She got a cold chill up her spine and her ears began to twitch. She wasn’t alone. There was someone very near by watching her. She glanced around carefully without moving her head. She couldn’t see anyone. Had her master’s men played a trick on her and instead of resting snuck up on her? No, their footsteps were too loud for them to sneak up on her. Who or what could it be? She would just have to wait for them to show themselves. So, she began fumbling with the chain that went to her collar. The remaining sunlight hit the metal and lightly touched her face. Now she could hear him coming next to her on the hill. She allowed herself to glance at him quickly to see if he was a threat to her or not. She didn’t know what to make of him. He wore nothing but black. He had a thin shirt underneath what was closest to being a vest. The vest did not have any buttons however and was long enough to reach were the belt loops of his jeans should have been. But since he wore loose leather pants he didn’t have any belt loops, not that that was important. He had medium length hair that was a light tone of purple. He was looking toward the sunset so she couldn’t see his face. She too directed her gaze toward one of the many wonders of the world. Maybe, she thought, if I just ignore him he’ll go away. He allowed himself a side-ways glance at her. He thought she was rather cute so her ignoring him upset him a little. She stopped fiddling with the chain on her collar and went to the one on her left wrist. The shackle was a little rusty and was rubbing off on her so she had a little bit of a rust stain on her wrist. The newcomer still sat next to her and he leaned back a little propping himself on his hands and looked at her; his reddish eyes were confused on why she was ignoring him. Most girls he couldn’t keep away from him and she wouldn’t even look at him. She gave up on the chain and ignoring him, “Who are you and what do you want?” Her voice was not used to being used and was a little scratchy. She swallowed to try and make it sound a little better. He blinked a few times and sat up straight, at least he wasn’t completely ignored. “My name is of no concern to you at the moment, I saw you sitting here and wanted to keep you company.” She was a little shocked at that. She managed to keep a straight face by watching the sun as it slipped away. “Why would it matter to a stranger to keep me company?” He shrugged. “Hmm...I don't really know. I just felt an urge to come here...Is that wrong?" She smiled a little for some unknown reason. “Not really. Its just that I have been through hell and back so people like you are a little…scary.” He stroked her long hair tenderly saying, “Scary? What could I do to be scary in your eyes?” “I don’t know and that’s the worst part. Not knowing what to prepare for.” He just nodded and looked back toward the sunset. “So… now may I know your name?” He nodded absent mindedly. “My name is Trey White. Yourself?” “Shinaba Brunea. I suppose you may call me Shi.” There was silence for a moment. “You know Shi, this sunset, is almost as beautiful as you are.” He looked toward her again a light blush appearing on his pale skin. She looked at him blushing as well. She couldn’t remember the last time she had received a compliment. If she had before she was sure it was never something like this. He looked at her for a moment before looking at the ground feeling embarrassed, “I’m sorry. I hardly know you and that was out-of-line. But, you are very beautiful.” Her tongue slipped a little as she tried to speak. “I-Its fine. It’s just I’ve never been called that before. I grew up as a slave and there is nothing beautiful about that.” Now it was his turn to be astounded. He had noticed the chains but where he came from those were sometimes worn as a fashion statement. She had been forced to wear them. “You… were a slave? Someone like you shouldn’t have to be a slave. You’re too beautiful to be a slave. Although, I can see why they would want to keep you locked up…” By this time the sunset was pretty much gone and the moon was now visible as the colors leftover from the sun began to fade away. “I became a runaway four months ago.” He didn’t say anything. He just continued to stare at her in an admiring manner. It made her stomach turn and she felt a pain in her chest. It was Dusk now and she yawned in a care-free manner. “It’s getting late. Don’t you have a home or something to go to? If you’re caught talking with me then you could be accused of having helped me escaped and be put to death.” She spoke quickly and swiftly adding as much venom as possible to the word ‘death’. “I’d rather talk to you than go home. Besides I’m not that easy to kill.” He smiled. He was very hard to kill. “Besides if anyone managed to catch up to you I’d protect you with my life.” She shook her head. “For someone you don’t know? It doesn’t make sense.” He leaned closer to her and looked her straight in the eye. His eyes were determined and soft at the same time. “It does to me. I’m falling in love with you…Shi…” He was making a very bad decision. If he fell in love with her…she didn’t want to think of all the calamities that would come to pass. “Don’t. Don’t fall in love with me. You’ll only get hurt. Continue with you life as you did and forget you ever met me.” And forget you ever met me. He had heard those lines somewhere before. Maybe… a decade or two ago. She stood up and began walking down the hill toward the west before he could respond. Under his breath he answered it anyway although he doubted she could hear it, and she stopped in mid-stride. She had heard him clear as a whistle. She just hoped that somehow she had heard wrong. “What did you say?” He spoke up a little more. “I said…I can’t not fall in love with you. I already have.” Dang it, She thought to herself. Even though she was a runaway what she had been taught to do and how she was trained made her unable to leave him. It might have a positive effect for her but that would depend on what he planned to do with her. She sat down and not a few moments afterward Trey was behind her. Her chains were too heavy for her to go any further than a mile unless she got some sleep anyway. He didn’t know why she had stopped but all that matter to him was that she had stopped. He reached his arms around neck and laid his head against her back. “Please…Don’t leave me. I don’t care what happens to me. The only thing that could hurt me now is you leaving and my love being unrequited.” She found it amusing. She could stay but there was chance his ‘love’ would still be unrequited. She noticed that his touch was colder than ice. She couldn’t move however. As strange as it was, having him there was some what comforting to her, Maybe it was because she hadn’t talked to anyone in four months. If only it were that. “I’m warning you. Loving me will not end well for either of us.” He lifted his head up. “Of course it won’t since you probably won’t love me back. I’m still willing to take the risk. I’ll give you anything you want. Name it and it’s practically yours.” For you to go away and forget about me, she thought automatically. She brushed a strand of hair out of her face and metal hit metal. She looked at her old beaten shackles. Maybe she could get a benefit out of accidentally stomping all over his heart. “Trey…” He got a sudden lurch of excitement. “Yes?” “If you’ve made your decision then the only thing I want right now is for the tools of my bondage to be taken away.” He nodded. “If that is what you really truly want. I can remove them right now for you. She took in a deep breath; this might not be so bad after all. Someone to take care of her, someone to protect her. He didn’t look all that bad either. He moved around and was in front of her now. He took her left hand gently and closed his eyes. He felt a sudden surge of strength and broke the cuff itself into two perfect pieces. She blinked a few times. He wasn’t human so what was he? He had no ears or a tail so he wasn’t a neko or a half-demon. If he was a werewolf he must have been a pacifist one. If that was even possible. He reached up to her neck and pinched the chain and it fell off of her collar. Suddenly he closed his eyes again and shook his head a few times. He had to resist the urge. She ignored to possibility of what he might be. A moment ago he had a perfect opportunity so he couldn’t be one of the eternally damned. Otherwise he would have killed her then. Perhaps she would question him later. She assumed there was a later since she was pretty much stuck with him now. Shinaba pushed all those thoughts to the side. Rubbing her wrist she felt an urge to cry. One step closer to being free. Sure she most likely couldn’t go anywhere being free but it was better than what she used to, much better. “Thank-you…” she said after and awkward moment of silence. He opened his eyes now. Whatever had been pursuing his mind was now gone. He smiled and stood to help her up. She was so much lighter now with the chains gone and when he pulled her up her new weight and the force of the pull were very uneven. He pulled her up and she collided with him. He grinned and held her with his arms around her waist holding her tightly against him. There was a slight height difference between them not counting Shinaba’s ears. Her eyes widened and she tried to pull away but it was too late. His pale lips found hers and she was pulled into the un-expected kiss. It wasn’t the first time she had been kissed, but, this was a real true affectionate kiss. She tried to pull away but he wouldn’t let her. She gave in and soon found herself kissing him back. It was a strange feeling. She couldn’t describe it in anyway except that she had never felt like this before. If it was love she would forever be confused about how this burning sensation that could be good. Maybe it was so good that it was bad. He pulled away smiling. It surprised her even more when even when they had stopped kissing the feeling remained. Maybe, just maybe, it might be love. But how could she love someone she just met? It didn’t seem humanly possible. But then again, neither of them were humans She was a Neko. And he was… well… she decided to face the music. The only reasonable possibility was that he was a Vampire. “This completely ruins my plans now.” She said aloud not realizing that it might hurt his feelings until after she said it. He just shrugged. “What were your plans?” She sighed. She leaned on him a little since she was unable to get out of his grip. “I was planning on going to the underground to see if there was someplace I could go to from there that was safe.” He laughed and let her go. “The Underground? That place is no longer a safe haven for anyone. I’m sure you could find a place to go to from there but with werewolves and vampires everywhere down there that’s not exactly the best place to go to.” Everyone knew that vampires and werewolves would never get along. She could already see bloody battles raging as a cult of vampires and pack of werewolves tried to defeat each other. “Do they fight often?” “Not really. There have been special collars made to help werewolves to resist transforming. The vampires can control themselves and mask there blood lust and massive strength on there own.” “So when you tapped into your strength the blood lust came with it?” He nodded. “How did you figure out what I was?” She grinned. “The fact that you haven’t torn me to pieces yet. Everything else that you could have been would have done so. A human can’t break those chains but I thought there was a chance you weren’t a vampire when you didn’t bite me although you have had so many chances.” She didn’t see him move but he had removed her collar and was behind her again playfully brushing his fingers across her now exposed throat. “Chances? I could have killed you the moment I saw you and every second that passed was even more dangerous. They weren’t chances just stronger and more likely opportunities.” Her heart rate shot up and he smiled as he felt her pulse quicken beneath her skin. “You know, I’m not going to hurt you. Why do you keep thinking that I will? There’s no need to panic.” “At first I was afraid because I didn’t know what you could do. Now that I know I’m even more afraid.” “Are you afraid of death?” She shrugged. “I’m more afraid of being unable to die. I don’t want to live forever.” She would rather die than be a vampire like him. How upsetting. “I don’t plan on doing either, although the second option is very tempting.” She reached out to steal her collar back but he side-stepped and she barely missed it. “If you want it back you’ll have to come and get it.” He whispered in her ear. It sent a chill up her spine. She hissed at him and her ears pricked up. “You could always be nice and just give it to me.” “But what fun is that?” She rolled her eyes. “You’re really annoying you know?” “I love you too.” She wished he would stop saying that. “It would make me feel safer if I had it on.” He grinned. “You don’t trust me to protect you?” “Oh, I trust you to protect me from everything but yourself.” “That’s understandable. But I would never to anything to hurt you.” “You might want to because I’m probably going to break your heart by the time the full moon comes around. In other words, at least a week.” He sighed and threw her collar at her. She hesitated when putting it back on. “You’ve already kicked and stabbed it so I don’t doubt it. But please, when you break it, only break it into two pieces so it can be fixed.” He paused for a moment. “Now then, Shall we go to my house? It’s rather close to the underground. I’ll drop you off at the house for a moment but I’ll be right back.” “Where will you go?" "I’ve got a few things to do to make sure your safe.” His house, it might have bed and hopefully a warm fire. She might actually start to like staying with him.
For me, this is reviveing and old friend. For you, it's probablly and eyesore
