“There is no privacy that cannot be penetrated. No secret can be kept in the civilized
world. Society is a masked ball, where everyone hides his real character, and reveals
it by hiding."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Since my first year in university I have been a follower of the Jungian psychology.
Especially his theory of social masks.
We all wear masks, and we may not even realize it.
We each show a different mask to a different person.
Why?
Because we're afraid of being vulnerable, of being judged, of our true selves being
shunned for the ugly, twisted, corrupted little creatures they really are.
But it is not only that. We don't show the same mask to everyone.
Why not?
Why are their different masks, instead of one universal mask to hide behind? We
show different degrees of ourselves, different aspects, to different people.
Does this mean, then, that we do not hid behind masks, but we put forward one
part of ourselves, and hid the rest.
I do not think we hid behind masks, more so, we hid behind a magician's curtain,
only showing the audience what we want them to see, and nothing more.
Because no matter how you talk to someone, hoe much you share with them
you will never be able to see the same colour red. And that is why we hide.
So people will never know you see a different shade.
