This is going to be my first "stream of consciousness, where I basically type what I'm thinking, spilling out my guts."
For as long as I can recall, I've had an obsession with bodily transformation. In my tweens, I would fantasize about being the victim of some crazy genetic experimentation or such, and later discovered that I have an outright transformation fetish. That's right, I'm aroused by depictions of physical transformation. The more detailed and gradual the change, the better. Recently, this has even began extend into the realm of body horror.
As it turns out, this is what got me into roleplaying in the first place: the ability to play out my fantasies. As such, my roleplaying lore has a very strong transformation element to it.
On the topic of my lore, the real problem I see in it is that while yes, I have some mechanics for the ways of the world, and I do have plenty of characters and races to put into this world, I don't actually have any places, cultures, or history. Just what am I to actually do about this? It's just not something I get as excited about.
Still, I ponder on it, and I do have a little bit of something. The world has technology slightly behind ours, though the presence of magic has made technology dependent upon it. Eventually, a brilliant but eccentric man starts dabbling in technology powered by chaos. Due to the nature of chaos, this technology is more powerful and versatile than conventional creations, but also dangerous and unpredictable. As such, he is shunned by the rest of the scientific community. Taking this snubbing as a sign that modern science has become stagnant and closed to new ideas, he decides to force them to see the potential of his work.
"They called me mad! Mad! But they'll see, they'll all see!"
Yeah, that's pretty cliche, but I think it still has potential. Tropes aren't bad. Anyway, he develops a device that infuses the mana in the air, which powers most devices, with chaotic energy, causing to to react to both spells and magical devices in strange, unpredictable, and dangerous ways. This causes most of the exposed technology to malfunction, and eventually break down. Several exposed magical power plants even melt down, spreading the contaminated mana even further. (It has something to do with the way the plants replicate mana or something.)
All in all, this sets huge portions of the world back technologically, and begins causing mutation in mages and monsters, who channel the tainted mana. World militaries try and fight this madman, but their magical technology is thwarted by his creation, and their more primitive, non-magical weapons are no match for his chaos-powered machines.
Now, I'm not sure how to fit my favored creations, the kran into this. They're already highly mana resistant, and can't even use magic, so if they were put into this world, their superior, non-mana-based technology could readily repair the world, and from a storytelling standpoint, I don't want this. Hindered access to travel and information make the world seem like a larger, more mysterious place, and that's just the sort of world I want. I suppose I could just leave the kran out, but as they are my favored creation, this is undesirable.
I'm going to go off on a tangent a bit, but I suppose that's why this is a stream of consciousness. Another thing I like about spreading chaos throughout the world is that as chaos is a force of change, it will not just cause transformation, but the way I see it, it will promote other things causing transformation. It will cause things to mutate in ways that enable them to mutate other things. Tasty.
Anyway, I suppose I do have two very, very basic city outlines ready already. There's an unnamed empire of sorts, which is supposed to be a focus of sorts for several main characters. There's also Vernul, the Kingdom of Sin and Gold. Ruled by an incredibly powerful demon known as Felvos, this kingdom is ruled by several lords under him, in a sort of feudal monarchy. There is a massive divide between the pampered upper class, and the suffering, toiling working class. The capital of the kingdom is basically an opulent nest of vice and indulgence, as per Felvos' design, where the nobility, comprised mostly of mightier creatures like demons and dragons, freely indulges in all manner of carnal pleasure, while the peasants struggle to feed themselves. Their military, is similarly tiered, with hordes of drafted and abused workers, lead by so-called elites who get by more on innate power and high-grade equipment than on actual skill and training.
