Yōkai Types
Yōkai is the proper word for any kind of supernatural monsters in Japanese Folklore. They range from malevolent, mischevious tricksters to creatures that bring fortune and luck to those they encounter. Their appearance ranges from animalistic to that of a regular Human, from the inanimate objects to strange shapes that can't be described.
The Four Sacred Beasts
Originating from China, the legend of the Four Sacred Beasts tells of four unique creatures associated with the four seasons/compass directions.
Players who want to use one of those four Yōkai types will have to present very solid character sheets to be accepted. There may not be more than a few of those at the time because of how particular and powerful they are.
Dragon (Spring/East) Fearsome and powerful, Dragons are often associated with water and rivers in general.
Appearance Typically the dragon is covered with scales, has a long serpentine body with a scalloped dorsal fin, claw-like feet and pointed tail. Its face is distinguished by small horns, large eyes with bushy brows, flaring nostrils, long whiskers and sharp teeth. The dragon is associated with water, and is often shown emerging from vapor and clouds to produce rain.
Personality Although fearsome and powerful, dragons are equally considered just, benevolent, and the bringers of wealth and good fortune. The dragon is also considered a shapeshifter who can assume human form and mate with people. Not much else is known about them.
Lore The Azure Dragon is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. It is sometimes called the Azure Dragon of the East (simplified Chinese: 东方青龙; traditional Chinese: 東方青龍; pinyin: Dōng Fāng Qīng Lóng, or sometimes simplified Chinese: 东方苍龙; traditional Chinese: 東方蒼龍; pinyin: Dōng Fāng Cāng Lóng), and it is known as Seiryuu in Japan and Cheongryong in Korea. It represents the east and the spring season. In both Chinese and Japanese mythology, the dragon is closely associated with the watery realm, and in artwork is often surrounded by water or clouds. In myth, there are four dragon kings who rule over the four seas (which in the old Chinese conception limited the habitable earth). In China, a fifth category of dragon was added to these four, for a total of five dragon types: 1.Celestial Dragons who guard the mansions of the gods 2.Spiritual Dragons who rule wind & rain but can also cause flooding 3.Earth Dragons who cleanse the rivers & deepen the oceans 4.Treasure-Guarding Dragons who protect precious metals & stones 5.Imperial Dragons; dragons with five claws instead of the usual four
Phoenix (Summer/South) A proud defender of justice and fidelity, this Yōkai takes the shape of a giant fire bird.
Appearance The phoenix is sometimes shown has having a bird's beak, a swallow's jaw, and a snake's neck; the front half of its body is thought to resemble a giraffe, the back half a deer. Its back resembles a tortoise, and its tail is like a fish. It is often shown in a paulownia tree (Chinese parasol tree).
Personality Often represented as more of a female nature, it values justice, obedience and fidelity. Not much else is known about the personality of this particular creature.
Lore Also called the "Vermilion bird", it is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. According to Wu Xing, the Taoist five-elemental system, it represents the fire-element, the direction south, and the season summer correspondingly. Thus it is sometimes called the Vermilion bird of the South (南方朱雀, Nán Fāng Zhū Què) and it is also known as Suzaku in Japan and Jujak in Korea. In China, early artifacts show the Phoenix (female) as intimately associated with the Dragon (male) -- the two are portrayed either as mortal enemies or as blissful lovers. When shown together, the two symbolize both conflict and wedded bliss, and are a common design motif even today in many parts of Asia.
White Tiger (Autumn/West) Said to be the king of all beasts, the White Tiger is a warrior and a protector.
Appearance They are generally depicted as very large, powerful-looking white tigers (also called "albino tigers" wink .
Personality Tigers are generally patient stalkers when hunting for preys, and their personality might reflect that habit. It is also ferocious and won't back off from a fight if they think they can win. Not much is known about their personality in general, but one could assume that they would dislike Oni, since those tend to wear clothes made out of Tiger skins, as well as Dragons, from some legends.
Lore During the Han Dynasty (in China), people believed the tiger to be the king of all beasts. Legend had it that when a tiger reached 500 years old, its tail would turn white. In this way, the white tiger became a kind of mythological creature. It was said that the white tiger would only appear when the emperor ruled with absolute virtue, or if there was peace throughout the world. Because the color white of the Chinese five elements also represents the west, the white tiger thus became a mythological guardian of the west. According to the Chinese Annals of Wu and Yueh, three days after the burial of the king, the essence of the element metal assumed the shape of a white tiger and crouched down on the top of the grave. Here the tiger is a protector - a preserver. The male tiger was, among other things, the god of war, and in this capacity it not only assisted the armies of the emperors, but fought the demons that threatened the dead in their graves. In some legends, it's archenemy is the Dragon.
Tortoise (Winter/North) A symbol of wisdom and knowledge, this Yōkai is also said to be immortal.
Appearance In legends, that Yōkai is represented as a giant tortoise, a snake coiling around it. They are rare, though, so there is little known about them.
Personality Yōkai of this type may be calm and patient like the tortoise, or sneaky and mysterious like the snake. Not much is known about them.
Lore The Black Tortoise is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. The word for "tortoise" was taboo; and the entire entity is not just the tortoise itself, but both the tortoise and the snake. It is sometimes called the Black Warrior of the North (北方玄武, Běi Fāng Xuán Wǔ), and is known as Genbu in Japan and Hyeonmu in Korea. It represents the north and the winter season. Although its name in Chinese, Xuánwǔ, is often translated as Black Tortoise in English, it is usually depicted as both a tortoise and a snake, specifically with the snake coiling around the tortoise. It is said to represent the Water element. In ancient China, the tortoise and the snake were thought to be spiritual creatures symbolising longevity. During the Han Dynasty, people often wore jade pendants that were in the shape of tortoises. Because of ancient Chinese influence on Japan, honorific titles and badges in Japan often referred to the tortoise or images of tortoises. The tortoise is a symbol of long life and happiness. When it becomes one thousand years old, it is able to speak the language of humans. It is also said to be able to foretell the future. The tortoise is also regarded as an immortal creature. As there are no male tortoise - as the ancient believed - the female had to mate with a snake. Thus the image of the tortoise embracing a snake.
