For those of you who don't know, I, like my cousin Vixixi, intend to use my journal to write. Right now, I'm more working on the structure of my world, so there won't be any actual story for awhile. I'd still be happy to get some feedback.
There are no true gods in this world. Instead, there are five elemental spirits that created the world and living beings by combining and infusing their powers. The five elments are fire, water, air, earth, and lightning. Each spirit, since becoming a direct part of existence and having its powers mixed with the others, has lost its ability to affect the world by choice. However, there are those born who are capable of using thse elemental powers. Through these people, the spirits can once again influence the world in small ways. The most common is speaking with such individuals. These people can normally channel their powers and allow the chosen spirit(s) to manifest as well. This manifestation can be in a form or simply as energy. Each spirit has a preferred form and a humanoid form. The one to appear is the choice of the summoner.
As mentioned before, only a select few are capable of working with the elemental spirits at a respectable level. Even then it's most commonly specific to one spirit, sometimes two. This is because living creatures are a combination of these poweres. Most lack the ability to destinguish between the powers within. Due to this, there is a different set of magic that also exists. Known as living magic, it is magic of light and darkness, of varying balances of elemental power. Examples include healing magic, blood magic, telepathy, telekinesis, illusions, etc... As expected, all elementalists are able to learn some form of living magic. They are always best in the living magics that are strong in their element. So a water elementalist would be a good healer (the body is approx. 80% water). A lightning elementalist would be good at mind magic (the brain sends and receives information as electrical impulses). Common magicians also tend to show strengths toward certain elements, but lack the key to be elementalists which no amount of training could give them.
As a final note on the topic, any elementalist can work with any of the spirits, it just takes considerably more training and energy for ones they're not gifted with.
Since the five spirits combined their powere to create existence, it is believed that a living being could actually surpass the spirits in powere. Many attempts were made. Then a process was discovered that did surpass the spirits. And thus the fight for existence began.
The process of making a Phase is one of the most ugly and mysterious known. It requires a magician of low to average level and a child whose development is just before puberty. Any other requirements of the child are unknown (to everyone but me). The magician creates a simple, yet very special bond between him or herself and the child. A product of this bond creation is the loss of the child's memories, right down to language. This memory loss occurs slowly over a about 1-2 years, the time necessary to complete the bond. A way to recover memories erased in this fasion has never been found.
When the bond is complete, the child gains a Phase body. The child transforms into this body when filled with a sense of loss or emptyness. It must be noted that even though the child has lost their memories, the result of those memories, their nature, remains the same. Their brain is still wired to love, hate, cry, and laugh. And their level of reasoning and thought remains the same.
The next step for the magician is to rid the child of emotion. While this could be done through the use of magic, it would not hold. The mind naturally resists and outside force changing the way it functions. It would inevitably try to revert to the way it was before.
But the mind doesn't resist changes that come from within. By isolating the child, by exposing them to nothing but loss and pain, the magician can slowly make them rewire themselves. They loose themselves in loneliness and depression, since their need for love is unfulfilled. And because of the 1st level of the Phase process, the child has no memory of ever being loved. They slowly destroy themselves from the inside. With the bond in place, the Phase body emerges.
Finally there comes a point where there is nothing left but an emptyshell. Where there was emotion is a void. When the child's heart reaches this point, their original body follows their memories, lost forever. This is when the void in their hearts manifests as velode or death touch. It appears as a black mist around the Phase's body. Not only does this touch destroy bodies, but souls as well. Any touched by velode no longer exist, and can never be reborn. Only the magician who created the Phase, via the bond, and other Phases are immune to velode.
