Call for people for CGI Starcraft Chronicles fan-movie
Oh yep: I stepped down from being a moderator until I get up to date with the site.

Critical.Mechanism ("C.M" now on), a skilled 3D CG artist, needs help from the Starcraft community/fans for this project. He already asked for permission for Blizzard and received a green light.
Look here for details: http://blizzplanet.com/?action=news&id=910

If you have skills and a Starcraft fan just contact C.M, but remember, this is a non-profit movie, maybe not an open source movie as Elephant dream, but still it will be from fans for fans.

Already two CGI Hollywood professionals are into the project already, since they are big fans of Starcraft. C.M can't undisclose their names yet, still this shows that the movie short is aiming for high quality.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, Blizzard started an art contest, mainly focused in 3D art, but 2D artists are still welcome.

Give it a try and show us your mad skills. (and see if you can win those prizes ^ _ ~.

Hmmm... since Blizzforums DID died for some months... and wiped out all content in their forums... I'll back up again some info in here:

Post from a software thread

Quote:
Sorry for the uber long post T _ T;;

All this software is freeware or open source, except Open Canvas newest version.

Most works in Windows, some exceptions only work in both Mac OS and Linux.

  • Blender - 3D suite

Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License.

  • Wings 3D - 3D modeler
Wings 3D is a subdivision modeler (for making 3D objects)

  • Inkscape - Vector graphics
Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor

  • Xara LX - Vector graphics
(linux and mac versions are free, windows one is NOT)

Very powerful, innovative and usable vectors drawing tool.
(Alike Inkscape, but incorporates several features that not even industry standard software have)

  • Scribus - PDF creator
Scribus is for making professional-looking page layouts for PDF's and professional printing.

  • Foxit reader - Fast PDF reader.
Small and loads fast, good alternative.

  • Artweaver - Drawing software
Artweaver is a simple Freeware program for creative painting, i.e. Artweaver makes all artistic effects, which you need for your work.

You can create sketches from photographs and experiment with a wide range of brushes. The brush simulation is realistic as possible. (good for making textures)

  • Messenger Plus! Live Windows Live Messenger Add-on
Messenger Plus! Live adds lots of features and extras that make your instant messenger easier, more useful or just tons more entertaining. (plus you can add it more features thanks to the community-created scripts)

  • Billy the sheep - Music player
Billy is a light weighted no nonsense audio player that allows you to quickly play an entire directory of MP3 files. Very small foot print in memory, specially good when you only want to listen music and care less for your system resources. (global hot keys are also practical)

  • Nvu - Web Authoring System
For creating web pages and managing a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML, alike FrontPage and Dreamweaver.

  • Cinepaint / Gasglow - Pro Image processing
    (Windows version will come soon~)
CinePaint is a collection of free open source software tools for deep paint manipulation and image processing. CinePaint is used for motion picture frame-by-frame retouching, dirt removal, wire rig removal, render repair, background plates, and 3d model textures. It's been used on many feature films, including The Last Samurai where it was used to add flying arrows. It's also being used by pro photographers who need greater color fidelity than is available in other tools.

  • Notepad++ - Code editor / Notepad replacement
Supports several programming languages, running under the MS Windows

  • Gobby - Collaborative text editor
Ever wanted to code or write stories with several people, all editing the same document in real time? This is for you. Supports multiple languages, and multiple documents in one session, includes simple multi-user chat.

  • Hamachi - Virtual private LAN across Internet.
Hamachi is an easy zero-configuration virtual private networking application.
In other words Hamachi is a program that allows you to arrange multiple computers into their own secure network just as if they were connected by a physical network cable.

  • Xnview - Image viewer/browser/converter
Pretty efficient, it's similar to ACDsee and other viewers.

  • Open canvas 4 - Painting tool (best for tablets)
(Sadly it's Shareware!! T _ T Best drawing tool ever (or nearly) anyway. (awesome brush engine!!)

BUT... the best part of the program is usable forever: replays. Yeah, imagine Starcraft-like replays but from a painting program. A huge community provide even more replay files very often... so you can watch how people sketch, paint, illustrate, texture and compose.

The first version of this program is free, it's still floating around the web, has few features in comparison, but allows users to edit a canvas together in real time via Internet (like the previous mentioned Gobby text editor)..
If you want it I'll see if I can upload it ^ _ ^.

  • Zoom it - Screen zoom
For all versions of Windows: ZoomIt is screen zoom and annotation tool for technical presentations that include application demonstrations. ZoomIt runs unobtrusively in the tray and activates with customizable hotkeys to zoom in on an area of the screen, move around while zoomed, and draw on the zoomed image. I wrote ZoomIt to fit my specific needs and use it in all my presentations.

  • Autoruns
As the name says, checks everything that autoruns at start up, everything arranged into classes. It can disable things or delete entries altogether.

  • Process Explorer - Advanced task manager
As the name says, checks every process loaded. Easy google every process to see what's it. Terminate them.

  • CDisplay - Comic / image viewer
Loads JPEG, PNG and static GIF images which are automatically ordered and presented for viewing one at a time or two at a time.
The images may be in a zip, rar, ace or tar archive file - no need to decompress before reading.

  • Comical - Comic / image viewer
Same as above, still updated, but I still prefer CDisplay.

  • ViPlay 2.09 - Video player
I recommend the 2.09 version since it has more features than the new version. Heh.
Try it and keep it if you like it. (I use it with the Alisio Skin)

  • Audacity - Audio recorder/editor
    For all OS's

  • Ardour - Powerful digital audio workstation
    Linux and mac only
