I have only one friend. His name is Tom Anderson. He is a nice guy and all, but he is kind of strange...He is kind of annoying. When you see him, he is always at a particular mood. When you see him, you get the feeling that he is just a waste of space. He is not my friend anymore. I deleted him. I deleted a person. I deleted Tom from myspace. And not only that, but after 4 minutes of myspace, I began to wonder if I was clinically insane. I realized my social life isn’t that bad to have a myspace. Not even the late Saddam Hussein was that lonely. And he lived in a hole. So what is wrong with the 120 million people in the world that have myspace? Are they insane? Yes. And not that, but they are hypocritical. If you ever notice, the historic people of the past wound now are the insane people of today. Joan of Arc... was she truly a religious warrior who turned out to be France’s strongest solider or a chick that dressed like a dude... who turned out to be France’s strongest soldier... Nostradamus. Did he really predict the Apocalypses? Or did he really just recite the bible. Jesus. Was he really the messiah? Or was he the Chris Angel of Israel. Even though these people lived in a different time period, they all have one thing in common. They all believed that they have spoken to a celestial being, a god if you will. Even though we have had the same problems ever since the first civilizations were raised (war, the youth, disease, politics, etc). I believe that the human race now is somewhat more sophisticated than it’s past. We have come to realized how much communication is important to any person of any background, because now, if someone believes that they have spoken to a celestial being, we consider them crazy and incarcerate them in an institution. And even though we can potentially be locking up the next prophet, this change is a good thing change. Anne Morrow once said that “Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.”, but to me, communication is a lot like Campbell’s™ chicken noodle soup. It’s healthy, mmm...mmm... good, and now, we need it in a Soup-At-Hand container for on the go. Yes ways for communication is growing, but if we want healthy communication, we should realize how communication is vital to our everyday lives and how the Information Age is changing the ways of communication for the worst.
A wise, man once said. “Anyone can make a quote. You don’t have to be a writer, a politician, or an athlete to make one. The man makes the quote. Not his career.” And that wise man was me. John A. Piece is a man that so unimportant that can’t even be identified even by Google, but even with his lack of notoriety, he states that “Communication is not only the essence of being human, but also a vital property of life.” Even though he is just a man of middle class status ...He is right. In a study done by Harry Hollow, He put monkeys in steel cages where they can see other monkeys, but they just couldn’t communicate. The monkeys where left in these cages from 3 months to 15 years. During their isolation, monkeys resulted to self mutilation, and other signs of depression. And after this experiment, one monkey actually stopped eating and died. Cause of death: emotional anorexia. And for humans, the results are the same, if not more worse. In the harsh, but wise words of Benjamin Franklin, “Humans are the only ones that rewire themselves to be more stupid.” Christy Greeve was just an average14-year-girl. She was a B+ student who participated in High school basketball and a Catholic peer group, but all that changed when she got a myspace. She began to lose her appetite and her interest, in anything but the computer screen. When her parents took her computer, she ran away from home and was found at her local library taking pictures of her breast for comments. She later gained 65 pounds from potato chips and monitor radiation. She later died after 93 consecutive hours trying to embed a video in her profile, without food, water or sunlight. Cause of death: maul nutrition. Social Isolation is growing in America. In a Washington Post Article it states that Americans are for more socially isolated in the past two decades. Well how could this be? With the increase of technology, the average person today has about 250 ties with friends and family. Even though Web 2.0 is bringing us together, we couldn’t feel more alone.
And even though I only have one friend, I feel more isolated than others. Some people might call me social retarded. For one example, some might find it strange that I like to talk to myself, while I find it strange that people blog even though no one cares about their stupid cat. And when I mean by ‘talking to myself’ I don’t mean how the prophets of before talked to themselves, but more like a director’s commentary. For one example, I was at wall-mart, and most people found it strange that I was shocked to be Time’s Person of the Year of 2007. Yes, I was Time’s Person of the Year. And not only can I put this on my resume’. I can truly say that I truly control the Information Age. Well, along with all of you. The problem is how we control the Information Age. Andy Warhol said that “In the future, everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes.” And now in web 2.0, we see that Andy was right. But it’s how we spend those 15 minutes that matters. If look back on the internet fads we see the most ridiculous of garbage. One can only spend so much time watching drunken college kids hurting themselves. Even though it is just a comment or a video; you still got to think you’re pretty interesting to post a video of yourself talking to a computer screen in your bedroom. R. Buckminster Fuller said that “Humanity acquiring all the right technology for all the wrong reasons.” Now most people find upgrading to Widow’s Vista is pretty mind numbing, but imagine having to update your Window’s XP to version that allows the computer to read the mind of the user. According to an article in Technology Magazine, this technology would make this into a reality real. Microsoft is actually designing a computer like this. The idea of this technology sounds like geek galore, but when explained, one can say that this technology is removing the second to last step to healthy communication. Ever since the birth of science fiction, we have always wished and feared for this technology. It truly amazing how technology grew over the past two decades, but we must look in the words of Ben Parker, “With great power, comes great responsibility.”
Overall, you can just say that without communication you get silence. And silence is the easiest text to misunderstand. Ever since the first civilizations were raised, we have had the same problems. For example, the fall of Rome, Cause: One of the many reasons is that there were several languages spoken, so many in fact that most could not understand each other, Effect: The fall of a once great Empire. The Holocaust, Cause: Hitler used his charisma and his voice to persuade others, but no one talked back, they just listened to his words, Effect: Millions are dead. 9/11, Cause: it is actually a proven fact that we had information before hand. But the most important fact is that no action was taken, Effect: A War we have never asked for. We have been talking about a communication breakdown for years, since 500 A.D., to 1930’s, to the 21st century. Led Zeppelin said “Communication Breakdown, it’s always the same”. But, there will always be a result. Now, what will happen to after our communication breakdown? I don’t know. But in the future, we will be talking about it.
