"is she sick?" corey suddenly asked while reese enjoyed his soup. reese wiped his mouth. "i wouldnt say sick." corey waited for something else. but, reese wouldnt say anything else. corey was ever so curious. why wouldnt anyone tell him about rina? "her real name's severine. can you tell me something about that? and, what real connection do you have with her? i dont get it..." reese stared at the bowl of soup. he stared as if he could find an answer in the broth or the floating peices of meat and vegetables. "...she was born in france. her parents met while they were studying there. her father is french, though. that;s why her real name is severine manon. when they came to new york, she didnt really know much english. at school, she was called rina instead." "then, why did she change her name?" "her parents changed it." corey waited for him to go on about the last name. he didnt. "...and what do you have to do with it?" reese smiled, faintly. "well, i got myself involved; they had nothing to do with it. believe it or not, rina is very pretty; beautiful. but i guess, the only thing remaining for people to believe that she is beautiful are her eyes." corey nodded, completely understanding. "i officially met her when she was four. i was around thirteen or fourteen." so, he wasnt studying when they met. "to me, she was the prettiest little girl i have ever met." he sighed deeply. "and, i guess thats how we both went downhill." inside, corey tensed. dont tell me they did it! "when i turned seventeen, and she was nine, we went to the theme park in florida. it was a vacation. her parents and my dad went with us. he was there too, now that i think about it...anyways, she told me that she wanted to marry me. it was very weird, having a girl ten years younger, tell me that she, was in fact, in love with me." "...how did this change her name?" "...something happened the next year. when she woke up again, her name was changed to 'rina marisa baxter'. i had gone to college and the next time we met, she wouldnt look at me, though we had the same name. by the time we both realized it, her parents declared us married." it seemed just like a tragic soap opera! how could this happen?! "...dr. baxter, you said that he was there too. who is 'he'?" reese's eyes darted out the window. he was looking at the sky. maybe he was waiting for God to give him a sign or something. a sign to allow him to remember who 'he' was. "franklin mcgreggor. or, franz mcgreggor. he was...he was-." reese couldnt get himself to say it. "he was the one who had started all of this."
"did you have fun?" dad asked as they drove home. corey remained silent. "corey?" "uh, yeah. it was great." "i didnt see you go anywhere. all you did was stay in the diner...i, for one, thought bea would've dragged you from here to the end of midway." cody laughed at himself. "i bought something for the rascals." "really?" dad seemed interested. "lemme see..." they drifted out of corey's thoughts. what reese had said about franz...it still haunted him. his past intentions were to hurt rina. now, why was rina still attached to him? didnt she know that everything that had happened was all of franz's fault? in half an hour, they had arrived at the front sign of westville. it would only be another fifteen minutes until they reached the suburbs. another five to the fifteen till they reached their street. now, how was he going to face rina? she would make him self conscious, because he wanted to know everything there was to know about her. she was an itch that he couldnt reach and it now annoyed the hell out of him.
sunday came. mom was beginning to have frequent contractions, so she was immediately rushed to the hospital in the morning before anyone even woke up. corey was the first to wake. he immediately opened the window of his room. rina's window was opened too. she was at her desk, which was under the window, writing something. he saw her, but she probably didnt see him. he saw that she had her laptop in front of her. the conversation he had last night came back to haunt him. recover. remember. real name. "severine!" he shouted. she stopped writing, as if shocked to hear that name. she looked up and he saw that she was crying again. "severine?" she asked. the question sounded more like a repeat to herself. she continued to look at him through watery eyes. "severine...it sounds so familiar..." "it's you, rina. you're severine." "but, i am rina." even when she said it, her voice seemed to deny what she had said. "my name is rina. rina baxter." "no. stop lying to yourself. you are severine. severine manon basilius." "i am rina, corey!" "severine." "i am...rina...severine..." she immediately dropped her pen and held her head. "severine...rina...manon...marisa..." the tears ran fast down her cheeks. they looked like transluscent rockets. "i am...severine-no! rina-no!" she violently shook, her skin seeming to jump off her bones. she immediately fell out of her chair. "rina!" corey shouted as he immediately stood up on his bed. he jumped off, flew down the stairs, ran out of the house, barged into the howlitz's house and ran into rina's room. she was having a spaz-attack on the floor. she was screaming, holding and yanking her ears, shutting her eyes. she kicked and flailed her arms when corey dropped on the ground. "what happened?!" george asked as he barged in. maggie was right behind him. maggie went to the other side of rina and shook her, as violently as she was shaking. "it's no good!" maggie announced. "get an ambulance, george!" george reached into his pocket and pulled out a cell phone. he punched in 911. corey didnt hear george talking. he didnt hear maggie shushing rina. all he heard was himself saying 'severine'. in moments, the ambulance came blaring down the street. they rushed into rina's room with a stretcher. in moments, rina was out of the house, strapped tightly to the stretcher like some crazy person in a straight jacket. george and maggie told corey to lock up their house and joined the paramedics in the ambulance. corey stood there, watching as the ambulance drive hectically down the road. he didnt hear it though. he still heard him saying 'severine' as if someone had pushed the repeat button on that name. he locked their house and quietly entered his own. in the morning, he'll feel bad about all of this. "hey, what happened over there?" cody asked. "she had another one of those attacks." cody didnt say anything else.
it was getting to be around six. his parents werent home yet. cody tried calling dad's cell, but he wasnt picking up. "maybe she went into labor..." kyle announced at dinner. "you could be right." cody gave him another serving of broccoli. kyle dipped a peice in cheese. they were having fondue, that night. corey dug his hand into his pocket, feeling for the howlitz's house key. it was there. he would do it. he was going to do it after dinner. he was going to sneak into their house and look for the truth...

"r-rina?" "i guess you'd refer to her as severine." the other side was silent. "rina..." he sighed, a very heavy sigh as if he didnt believe he was even talking about her. "i-i saw that you two have the last name..." "oh. you saw that?" he sounded as if he knew where corey was getting to. "is-is it true?" "...how should i put this..." it was true. "...it's not what you think it is. i'm not some old pervert. i know she's young and i probably seem old to you, uh-." "it's corey." "okay, corey. it's not what you think it is. it's very complicated to explain. i might not be able to explain it to you over the phone. where are you? maybe we can meet up..." "i'm in westville." "that's where she is, huh?" corey could almost feel him painfully smile. "i knew she'd choose to go somewhere very far away." corey wanted to know what he meant but he didnt say anything. "so, uh, did you still want to come?" "i'll meet you at midway. can you come out that far?" "sure. when did you wanna meet?" "...tonight. five thirty."
corey paced his room. he was going to meet reese. to finally know what was going on and who, exactly, rina was. "corey!" mom called. "rina's here!" corey tensed. she was here! "uh, be there in a sec!" he ran down the stairs and practically collided into cody. "hey, it's just rina." he glared at his brother and went into the kitchen, calmly. "hey-hey, rina." she waved. "i'll leave you two alone. say, rina, wanna go to midway with corey?" "mom!" "midway?" "it's halfway from-" "MOM!" "what?" corey gave her the look. she got it. "okay then." mom smiled and excused herself. "what was that about?" rina asked. "...i was going to go with bea." corey poured himself some oj. "so, did you need something?" "i-i'm sorry about last night." "it's alright. i dont mind." she looked at him. "i had a feeling that you wanted me to tell you about myself, since we're friends and you know nothing about me." she fidgeted with her hands. "nah. you tell me whenever you think you're ready. i can wait." "you're very kind."
five thirty. corey looked at his watch again. his dad was around, but so was cody. so corey was free from their watchful eyes. he waited at the diner, watching the flea market go on. there were alot of clothes and toys that were being sold. suddenly, a white car pulled up. a man came out. he was very tall, towering at about six five. dark hair, dark eyes. light stubble, speedy built. he wore a suit and hiding his dark eyes were a pair of glasses. he dusted invisible dust from his suit and walked into the diner. corey observed. he sat down on the booth in front of corey's. they looked at each other. his mouth corner's folded just like rina's. he got up and went to the side of corey's table. "reese baxter, at your service."
"did you want something to eat?" reese asked as he looked over the menu. "my treat." "nah, i'm okay. i already had something to eat already." "anything to drink, then?" corey shook his head. "well, i'm gonna get some soup." reese folded his menu. "so, where do you two go to school too?" "westville high." "i never thought that she'd choose a small town." "her grandparents are there." reese seemed to grow a bit angry. "old maggie and george?" "yeah." reese muttered something corey didnt hear. "so, what kind of doctor are you?" "pediatrician." "arent rina's parents doctors too?" "in new york." "new york?! i thought that they lived in the city!" reese shook his head. "nah. met them when i was in new york." "...rina forgets alot. i wanna know what happened." "you sure do worry about her." "well, we're friends and whenever she tries to tell me something, she breaks down crying and-." reese had gone pale. "...if-if you care about her, i beg you to never ever talk to her about her past." corey stared at reese, dead in the eye. "what the hell happened to her?" reese looked away. "that is classified." he turned to look at corey again. "i am sorry to keep it a secret. if she recovers, she might tell you, one day." corey tensed up. "recovers..."

monday, tuesday, wednesday. it's all the same stuff to corey; ex-cept for the fact that he now dressed accordingly to what bea's image of the perfect, non-geekyboyfriend was. gelled hair, graphic tees, blue jeans, brown ecko sneakers. alright, then. corey noticed that rina didnt dress in the nice clothes she had bought. what was the point of buying those clothes, then? thursday. friday. then, friday night. corey, once again, was having a date. but it was strange that bea never really classified him as her boyfriend. corey also realized something he had to sacrifice to belong to the most Perfect group of people in high school: his personal life. he never once was alone. people were always surrounding him. bea drove him insane with shopping. thinking about not being able to be alone upsetted him. he immediately picked up the phone and dialed bea's number-. no. let's forget about her for a second. he dialed a more familiar number, hoping that someone was home. "ring...ring...ring..." he mocked the dial sound. "hello?" "are you available tonight, rina?"
"what did you wanna talk about?" rina asked as she held open her door. "i just thought that we've been distant lately." "sit down. did you want something to snack on?" "what do you have?" "grandma just made snickerdoodles." "yeah. i'll take some." corey looked around the homey kitchen. this was the first time he ever sat down at their dining table. "hey, rina? ive been meaning to ask...where are your parents?" "my...parents..." she repeated. she stared at the counter. "i never saw them and you never talked about them." "my parents..." "yeah. your parents. like, what do they do?" she blinked rapidly and he suddenly realized that she was welling up. "my...parents...my daddy is a doctor. my mamma is a therapist. they live in the city, very far away from here." she suddenly closed her eyes and let out a very deep sigh, as if she was letting go of something. he regretted asking her about it. "...is there only you?" she nodded, very slowly. "they were always very busy," she barely whispered. "that's why i'm here." okay, so she was here because her parents didnt take care of her. that made sense.they were doctors. she took out the cookies and some milk. "corey...dont ever ask me about them again. i dont like to talk about them." he looked at her back. "well, if thats what you want."
"these are good." "i love snickerdoodles." rina drank some milk. "...didnt you have a date today, or something? it is friday night." corey laughed. "it's not a date; it's an outing." she laughed, too. "you dread the weekend, dont you?" "you know it." "then why did you agree to be her boyfriend?" "i didnt. we arent exactly dating either. and if we are, then she probably didnt tell me. it doesnt sound like we are." "how did you get stuck with her?" "well, funny story...we kinda made out. last week." "oh? well, that is funny." they both had a small laugh. "wanna watch tv or something?" she suggested. "okay." they both headed over to the living room. rina flipped the channels until they landed on spongebob. he looked at her as if she was joking. "spongebob?" "yes. i like spongebob. i never really watched cartoons in the city; i was always doing something. i cant remember exactly what, though." "you dont remember alot." she smiled. "you're right; i dont know why. i can only remember certain fragments. i guess i have a memory disorder." he laughed. "i can only remember a little bit of my childhood. it's like someone's blocking out the pictures." "...maybe you dont wanna remember?" "why would i do that?" "who knows. i'm just suggesting, that's all." he reached for a cookie. before it reached his lips, he stopped. "suppose someone wronged you in your past and you're trying to forget it?" he laughed. "that sounds too much like a movie, dont you think so?" she didnt laugh though. she was just staring at the plate of cookies. "rina-a? earth to rina?" "...wronged me in my past..." she repeated while staring at the cookies. suddenly, the tears fell down her cheeks. "my past...?" "rina!" he shook her. she shook her head and looked at him. "corey." "what's wrong?" she wiped the tears with the back of her hand. "what? what's wrong? why am i crying?" "that's what i'm asking you." "i dont know why. what were we talking about? why are we watching spongebob?" he continued to stare at her in awe. she was crying when she was beginning to talk about her past. that was it-her past. her childhood. when she was with her part of the baxter family.
when he was at home, he searched the internet. she had said that her parents were doctors. good thing he was a member at the family tree website. "lets see. baxter family. baxter's gotta be her dad's last name. her mom's gotta be a howlitz." in seconds, the results came out. there was rina. "how strange." her name wasnt rina; rina was only a nickname. her name? severine. severine manon basilius baxter. he looked at her mother. deline catherine howlitz. her father. alexander manon basilius. hmm...interesting. very strange. he clicked on rina's name. it seemed as 'rina marisa' was her alius. her parents changed it for her when she was ten. so, her name was like that for five years. there was also...another name connected in this family tree. it was a completely different name. his last name... baxter. corey clicked on it. reese baxter. a brother? no. it was worse. "husband?"
she was there. with this stranger. she was dressed in white. the stranger in a tux. then the ominous voice said "you may kiss the bride". corey woke up, his eyes acheing. he had searched the internet for hours. no matter what, this 'reese baxter' was always linked to rina. or, severine. his head spun. rina was young. younger than him. her name was severine, not rina. her last name was basilius. she was married. baxter. reese. rina. severine. basilius. it wasnt making sense. the peices werent falling together. there was also franz, the older man. but, if there was franz, what were the chances of reese really being married to her? it was against the law. she wasnt of age. he immediately jumped out of bed and woke up his computer. again, he searched the web. there had to be more files than what was there. then, he saw it. contact dr. reese baxter, MD. he was a doctor.
corey stared at the phone next to his hand. he had the number; he had the name. he picked it up and held his breath as he punched in the numbers. the three rings seemed like an eternity. suddenly, someone picked up. "dr. reese baxter's clinic. what can i do for you?" "i-i am calling on personal terms with dr. baxter. may-may i speak with him?" "one moment." there was office music. corey realized that this was his favorite song. he couldnt hum to it right now; he was extremely nervous. "hello? dr. baxter speaking. how may i help you?" corey's lips went dry. this man on the other end...shared something with rina. "hello? hello?" he...he was suppose to be rina's husband, though it was almost impossible. "is this a joke? if you dont speak i'm going to-." "i-i live next door to rina."

it really did pour. and, once again, corey and rina werent talking. he noticed that she had quite a few bags with her. her clothes werent the same old garbage she wore. and, she stared at her hands in her lap. corey stared out the window, admiring the sound of rain. it was like a soft lullaby, more pleasant than lonely. "corey?" rina fidgeted with her hands. she took him by surprise. "ye-yeah?" "how was your day?" she was talking in a whisper, as if she didnt want to really talk. she probably felt awkward and decided that it was best to start a conversation. "it was fine. you?" should he have asked? "i met an old friend." "oh?" so, he was only her friend. "yes. we havent seen each other in years. we are really close and he stayed in the city, so i didnt really see him for awhile." wait-. did that mean she was away from the city for a longer time than she was staying here? "why didnt you see him for awhile?" she looked at him, and her lips parted for a second. "i dont know why." "oh." "i dont really remember why. i just remember that i woke up one day and realized many months, almost a year, had passed by me. i was older, not the same age i was before that. i looked different, too." "you've been separated from him for a year?" "i think so. but, when i saw him today, he looked much older then what i thought he would look like. it was like he aged quicker than i did. strange, isnt it?" "no. it isnt at all." he was lying to her, so she would feel better. "you're lying." she saw through it, though. "it is very strange. i wake up one day and i feel as if there is a time gap between what was then and where i was now." she wasnt really making sense any more.
just to make things more perfect, the bus popped a tire. it was already seven...now, they we're going to be staying there for another hour or so. but, corey didnt mind. he and rina were talking about their dreams. as it would seem, rina enjoyed writing stories. she loved telling people about them. and, when she told corey one, he swore that it sounded as if she wasnt making it up. she laughed, really laughed, when he said so. "today's a memorable day, rina." "really? what?" corey looked at her. "today's the day that you really laughed and you really smiled. normally, you do a quick smile and a small laugh." "yes. i did. maybe it was because i met my friend." "what's his name?" corey didnt like the way he had just sounded, though. it sounded as if he was intending to kill this whatever-his-name was. "franz." "franz...wow, cool name." "yes. we met in school, elementary. he was in fifth and i was only in first." he was older! much older! he was a friggin adult! "oh?" "he practically raised me; we lived next door to each other." great. this was what corey needed; to hear this wonderful girl talking about a-...another guy. wait a minute. who was he to be so pissed off for? he was sorta going out with bea lopez, the most popular sophomore to ever live; and here was rina, the completely loony girl, talking about some other dude and getting corey pissed off. was it because...because...he-? "he was always there for me." she caught him off guard. "what?" "well, whenever i was lonely, because i didnt have many friends, he was there. he always helped me, with anything."she then grew silent. "but...but he had to go to high school..." she blinked rapidly. the tears came down. "and-and i was alone...again..." her eyes widened. she began to shake-. corey immediately grabbed her and held her tight. no, he wasnt going to let this happen again. not like the time at the zoo. he patted her head and slowly rubbed her back, as if really believing it would calm her down like the rascals. "shh...it's okay...dont cry..." she closed her eyes and he slowly heard her breathing even. she was getting better. he let her go and saw that she was looking at him, her eyes puffy and a bit red. "thank you..." she nervously said. "i dont know what exactly gets into me, you know." corey nodded. "it's alright. if it calms you down, then i'll be happy to help you." she smiled. "ugh, this is embarrassing." she quickly wiped her eyes. "i cant believe you're seeing me crying." he gave a weak laugh. "it's alright to cry in front of me. i don't mind."
"i thought something terrible had happened to you!" mom screamed as a soaked corey came through the front doors. "the bus popped a tire, mom. i came on the six fifteen bus. you can call rina and confirm this; i'm not lying." corey immediately went to the fridge. "it's nine thirty, corey." dad sighed and put down the newspaper. "we're parents, son; we worry." "i know. but, since it's really pouring out there, it took sometime to get it fixed. then the stupid engine and the towing company and-" he could rant on and on about it. "okay, okay, i understand. just as long as you're home now." dad smiled. "dont forget to change out of that wet outfit." "yeah, yeah." corey waved his hand as he took out the leftovers and heated them. "so, how was your date?" he didnt want to talk about it. the date seemed more like a set up or something...a set up for him to carry bags and be used like a slave. "it was good." "that's it for your first date?" mom asked. "you didnt do something-anything-right?" dad asked. "it was more like an outing rather than a date." corey forked the mashed potatoes. "and, i'm not doing anything funny, okay, dad?"

it didnt take long before the two arrived in the only mall around. It wasnt that big, but it really wasnt that small. All the shops were here: games, clothes, accessories. Even a pet shop. During the ride, either one didnt talk. all corey did was remember the delirious shade of green rina's eyes were. was it a sign? possibly, she was jealous? no. it couldnt be, could it? it didnt make sense...him, almost being a new popular, going out with a crazy chick. hm. his chances were better off with bea lopez. "thank you," rina said when they went through the sliding doors. "no prob. listen, did you want to catch a ride home with me? i bet i'm the only one using a bus." "no." she had said it so nonchalantly...so bluntly. "i have someone that will come and pick me up." "really?" she looked at him with those fiery eyes. "why would i have to lie about that?" "no reason. i just thought that if you came with me, you should also leave with me." she seemed to laugh a bit. "you're funny." she then left him there, standing in front of the sliding doors.
"did you wait long?" bea asked as she came to meet corey with a million bags in her hands. "no. not at all." she smiled. "good, cuz, we're going to have fun today." she then shoved the bags into corey's hands. "could you help me carry these? yeah? thanks." "no prob. so, where are we going?" "well, i wanted to catch something to eat first-by the way, i love your hair- and then we'll head over to do some more shopping-is it okay if i pick out something for you? i want you to wear your best when we're at school too-and then i have to get something from the lingerie department on the second floor-i'm sorry to have to be taking you there-and then, ricky'll come pick us up." she digressed alot. "yeah. okay, i got it." but, in reality, corey thought that they were going to do something fun-not shopping. like her schedule, bea pulled corey all the way to the food court on the second level. they quickly munched down the pizza and side salads. she didnt even talk that much. "hey, bea, i was thinking we should catch a movie-." "mmm-" she raised a finger as she drank her soda. "i'm sorry, but i cant. i have to get as much shopping done today; i have to be somewhere tomorrow." "oh. okay. then next week-." "yeah. sure. next week. uh huh." her cell phone rang. "`scuse me for a sec." she answered it. "hello?" she squealed and then giggled. corey tried hard not to roll his eyes. instead, he looked at the other direction, secretly wondering what rina was doing at the moment. he then caught sight of her, except she wasnt alone and she wasnt dressed in those old and strange clothes. she actually looked attractive. the person she was with was a young man, possibly a bit over eighteen. corey raised his eyebrows. she was...on a date?! she was laughing and he was sure that her voice sounded lighter and sweeter. she was...happy and actually having a good time. her lips werent quavering nor did the mouth corners rise and set quickly. no, she was really laughing and smiling. her green eyes were still that shade of green from before. maybe she was nervous? "what are you doing?" bea asked. "oh. you're done?" "for about five minutes now. we're you checking someone else out?" "no, no i wasnt. i was just spacing out."
corey felt like he would never get out of the mall. it was already three and they were still in the same store. he hated shopping with girls, though he never really went on one till now. "bea? are you done?" she was trying on some clothes. "hold on! the strap's too loose!" as she fiddled with the straps, corey's mind wandered to the scene he had saw. what did it exactly mean? was that her boyfriend? her brother? a friend? she seemed to be having so much fun, too. her hand was also entangled with his arm...they were linking arms and having a good time... "corey!" bea had come out. she was dressed in some weird and audacious sundress. "well?" "...it's gray..." "well, duh. i'd buy it in some other color, but they only have gray. well? what do you think?" "...sure. i like it."
finally, they got to leave. on the way out, he saw her again with that man. "what the hell-...?" "what?" bea asked. "i didnt hear you..." "nothing." she raised an eyebrow. "you sure?" "yeah. nothing; it's nothing." bea shrugged. "is it alright if we stop somewhere else, first?" corey checked his watch. no, it wasnt alright. "uh, bea, i have to go. now. my parents are going to worry." "chillax, corey. it's only six." "yeah, i've gotta baby sit, tonight." "oh." "uh, you dont have to call ricky; i can take the six fifteen bus." "are you sure?" "yeah. i bet you have a friend or something waiting for you, right?" "well, yeah, but-." corey stopped her. "dont worry. i can manage myself."
he waited. at the bus stop. apparently, she wasnt coming; rina was right when she said she had a ride. "damn it...wish i took the offer of a ride home..." he checked his watch. six ten. five more minutes. he hated waiting. finally, he saw the bus approaching. he then felt a rain drop. "what the hell-?" he didnt even realize the clouds gathering above. "just my luck." he sighed and got up. the rain began to pitter patter as the bus parked. five passengers boarded before he did. he was second to last. the bus wasnt crowded. good. he liked to sit in the front seat, next to the bus driver. he practically knew the man who drove the bus; the middle-aged man, logan, lived right across from him. "hey, corey." "hey, logan." "had fun today?" "yeah." logan pulled the lever to close the door, until he saw someone running to the bus. they were using their bag for covering. he immediately opened it. "oh, almost forgot you." corey looked up. "hey." "oh." rina's eyes seemed to grow softer, unlike the fierce green corey had come to like. "can-can i sit here?" she asked, her voice soft, like the time she was with the other guy. "yeah." "this is great timing," logan admitted, "it's about to pour." he closed the doors.
