The first night I went to that youth group, what was going to change my life in a year's time had already been set in place. On arriving at the building at which the group was held and stepping inside, my first thoughts were surprisingly positive. This seems... lively I thought, looking around the big, bright room full of teens aged 12 and above, all doing different activities. This thought, however, did not last long. Almost as soon as I had put my foot inside, every single face in the room looked up, and stared. I kept my head down, and walked over to the owner's desk to sign in. He tried to make me feel welcome, but he could tell that I had already been completely isolated. I instinctively directed myself over to the quiet corner where I could see a large bookshelf and some comfortable looking chairs and giant beanbags scattered around. I picked out a lengthy fantasy novel, and sat myself down amongst the cushions.
Every so often, i would look up - paranoid that people were staring and laughing - to see what the others were doing. It was then that i noticed a boy with longish, feathered black hair and hazel eyes, staring at me from the window seat he was lazing in. Just another judgemental idiot I thought to myself, refocusing my attention to my book. I looked up again, about half a minute later, and he was gone. Weird...
That's a good book you've picked out there
I snapped the book shut and looked up, startled at the voice which had just reached my ears. It was the boy. He was sat in the chair next to mine, smiling a kind of half-smile, a smile that mystified me and shook me to my core.
The ending's not what you expect. I've read it 4 times and it still catches me out every time!
I said nothing as he continued to smile at me. My heart was still racing.
I'm sorry, did I frighten you?
He asked me
Just a little...
I replied, breathless. Why is he talking to me? I wondered silently. Nobody EVER talks to me...
My apologies. I thought you looked a little lonely, so I decided I would come over here and talk to you - make friends.
I was startled
You want to be friends... with me?
Whyever not?
You don't think I'm a freak...?
I asked hesitantly, blowing my draping silver hair out of my eyes
Not at all. You're unique. That's a good thing
The way he spoke, made him sound wise beyond his years. I was drawn in by his voice. We both laughed, smiling. I was still reeling with shock at this revelation that I didn't even realise the manager calling that the group had ended for the evening.
Excuse me, I must go now. I'll see you again soon.
I just stood there, still in shock, before I realised.
Wait!
I ran after him.
I didn't catch your name.
He turned around, and smiled. He placed his hand on my left arm, his eyes glittering, and said:
I'm Joel. Nice to meet you, Nikura.
