I sat bolt upright, startled out of sleep by some sound, real or imagined. I glanced around my one room home, thanking fate for blessing me with eyes that cut through darkness as well as daylight. Seeing nothing, but unable to shake the feeling of unease that has lurked, just beyond understanding, since the moment of my waking, I rise from my bed. I dress quickly, and, grabbing my nin-to from beside my bed, I head out into the night.
Standing just outside my door, I search the darkness for anything out of the ordinary, as the feeling had not yet abated. Indeed, It had risen to a tingling in my spine. <A warning, but against what?> I had never been popular with the townsfolk, but it had never escalated to midnight attacks before. No, they where content simply with shunning me in public, and whispering behind my back, when they thought I was out of earshot, about the strange woman who carried a blade.
Suddenly, the warning spiked, and a small sound above and behind me drew my attention, just as a black clad, cowled assailant jumped toward me from the eves of my home. I drew my blade and parried his blow, slashing his wrist in the process, causing him to drop his weapon. <Sloppy> He drew a tanto with his off-hand and lunged, but I sidestepped him, slashed his chest, then finished him with a downward thrust. I looked down at his body. Had he succeeded in surprising me, it would be me lying on the ground right now, not him.
After checking the roof for any further assailants, I searched the body. He was a decidedly average man. the sort that disappears into a crowd without a trace, and who's face no one remembers. He was wearing a simple Ninja Gi, and was not caring any form of identification, save a crest that I was unfamiliar with. A crimson scorpion set on a four pointed star. Left with more mysteries than answers, and with the sense of immediate danger gone, I returned inside.
