In this story, Arnicus(ar-nis-us) has this demon-form which occurs to him, when he is in a state of extreme anger, or a place of danger.
Of course, he is completely unaware of this untill later.
Even if his conscious memory doesn't want to believe it, his sub-conscious will whole-heartedly admit to it.
So, like in a lot of other stories, he has a terrible past, and an unwary conscience.
