Finn MacCool and the salmon
Cool MacTrenmor of Leinster, chieftain of the warrior band known as the Fianna, died in battle. Soon after, his wife Murna bore his son, Finn. To protect the baby from her husband's enemies, Murna took him into hiding. She brought him up with the help of 2 warrior woman, who taught the boy to be a skilled fighter.
Finn grew tall and enormously strong, and eventually the time came for him to go into the world to gain the wisdom he would need to take his place at the head of the Fianna. He Sought out the poet and wise man Finegas to be his teacher.
The Young man found Finegas beside a pool, where he had been trying for 7 years to catch and eat the salmon of knowledge. the person who ate this magical fish would gain the power to see into both the past and the future. soon after Finn arrived, Finegas caught the fish and gave it to his pupil to cook.
As Finn was cooking the fish, he burned his thumb and sucked it to ease the pain. at that moment the fish's knowledge flowed into him, and he changed from a youth into a strong, full-grown mam. Finegas knew then it was Finn's destiny, not his own to eat the fish and gain its wisdom for all time.
Finn MacCool went on to become the mightiest and wisest leader the Fianna ever had and he lived to an old age. when his days were coming to a close, it is said that he did not die but fell into an enchanted sleep deep in a cave, where he waits to rise again one day.
