The grains of rice crash to a halt before the candy town. Some stumble, several ranks fall down like dominoes. However, they all manage to right themselves in whatever shred of dignity they have left.
"Ahem! We would like to talk to Mr. Jellyfish!" A high-pitched squeak cries out through the speakers.
Our friend the jellyfish pulses slightly, glaring at the screen. In a huff and a swish of bubbly currents, it disappears out the door.
"Should we go follow?" =o
"I wanna know what's going on. C'mon."
Cautiously, we inch out together behind the quickly receding trail of bubbles swishing before us. Our bubble-heads twist this way and that as we look out cautiously for any hazardous enemies. Toxins, wastes, or rice.
We all assume different positions on the top of the candy buildings, peering curiously over. Already we have seen the ground covered in rice, but it looks different from here, I muse.
"I am Mr. Jellyfish. What is it?" He sounds greatly annoyed and irritated, his colors swirling madly together.
"It would seem that you hold our prisoners here! They are ours! Not yours! Give them back!"
I blink, then look at the others from my own precarious perch. They seem gobsmacked. Certainly, the rice never treated us too nicely, but to be prisoners! We clamor out indignantly.
"Prisoners? Why, US? PRISONERS?!?"
"Huh, too bad you lost us! We aren't coming back!"
"You've got some nerve, talking to us and our friend Mr. Jellyfish like that!"
The head of the rice army frowns. "You mean that these humans are not your prisoners, but your friends?"
Mr. Jellyfish bobs up and down rather quizzically. "Erm, yes. Why?"
"Huh!" The general harrumphs. "Figures! To keep those kinds of things as your friends! You never could think properly like us of the anti-sushi regime."
I inch over and whisper in Adri's ear. "They, thinking properly?"
"Pft. They don't even have brains to think with in the first place!" D<
The rice down below start making noise, lots and lots of noise. They look like a wave, jumping up and down, up and down, until the ground starts shaking. One still can't see the sand, even as they move.
"Down with the enemies! Down with the invaders!" the rice call out, almost unintelligebly.
"Er, does this seem a bit dangerous?" Sar suggests shakily.
"Yes...let's leave, shall we?" Chibi-bunni agrees. Both of them begin to slide off the chimneys they're hiding behind. I'm about to follow when Nerfe calls out indignantly.
"And just let Mr. Jellyfish fight them off? I think not! What kind of LOians are you?"
"Selfish, cowardly ones, that's what," Fae mutters beside me.
"Well, I'm gonna fight!" YYugi announces, brandishing a large, sugary candy cane. It flashes, and the movement below stops.
"OOHHH...SHINY." All the rice seem entranced. O.O
"By any chance," Yunsi mused, "Do you think they might be attracted to shiny things?"
I pick up a gumdrop near my left ankle, glittering with sugar crystals. I take a tiny nibble for myself, then toss it to the rice. They seem to follow its movements.
"Ohhh..."
"Ahhh..."
Thunk. The rice have parted for the large gumdrop, and it hits the sea floor. A cloud of sand rises up, then settles again.
"Oy! Back into formation!" the general roars. >.<
His voice rings for a millisecond, and then all that's left is melee. The rice jump each other mutinously for a bite of the sugary treat.
"Mff!"
"Grmfff! Mine!"
"Hey!"
We all gaze in wonder at the funny scene, then smile evilly. Let's toss more!
Gigantic panels of gingerbread, long, rolling loops of sugar belts, and sticky bricks of gum all topple over. No rice cares for its comrade as ranks are smooshed, only caring to get their own bite of sweetness.
"Hey, look at Mr. Jellyfish!" =o
Suddenly, he's a part of the fray, zapping electricity left and right. He's glowing a very, very neon pink, a rather blinding variety of rosey colors.
"RRARGHHARRRGH!!!"
A mouthful of a war cry emits from YYugi as he jumps down on the nearest group of fighting rice. Fire erupts, and blackened ashes are tossed too and fro.
"YEAAAYEYEYAAA!!!"
Chibi-bunni then leaps after him, brandishing several sharp icicles. Holding them before her like battering rams, she impales dozens of strugging particles.
"LUNAR OASIS!!! YAHHHH!!!"
The rest of us join in, with our own weapons of choice. Adri's ORLY? hat sweeps back and forth with its pummeling fists, sending the rice flying into the air as she kicks her ball and chain at those in her way. Des, full of sharp poking corners of armor and armed with other sharp devices, uses his own body as weapon, flying everywhere like a whirlwind of destruction. Sar is accompanied by a fray of gleeful green monkeys as she strikes out from every direction, uprooting rice everywhere. Fae's katana flashes back and forth, cutting through water and foe alike as her seal slippers drag her along, munching happily on the fleeing rice. Yunsi's scarf acts as a perilous whip, the fluffy balls on the ends of her hat pommeling whatever isn't taken out by the flailing cloth in her hands. Nerfe's skull helm bashes back and forth, turning the heads of his enemies into mush. I choose to send the poisonous tentacles of my hair after the rice, leaving them screaming in agony as they froth at the corners of their mouths.
RRRUMBLE...
RRRUMBLE...
I blink through the curtain of fury before my eyes, freezing at the sight before me. Dozens of tiny limp figures lie at my feet, swaying gently with the tides. Light and empty like shells, they erode in a matter of seconds, becoming one with the sand. However, where each one dies, a flash of wispy white flutters toward an ever-growing mass of twisting, writhing clouds.
"YOU DARE TO CHALLENGE US? DO YOU DARE CHALLENGE US?!?"
All of us freeze at the chilling voice, a collaborative sound of millions. As the cloud stretches towards us, we are able to make out the forms. Slowly, we back into a ring, stumbling along the new layers of sand until our backs are protected.
For before us stands an immortal regime of spirits, waiting for revenge.
