Chapter 1. Telepath
Chapter 1. Telepath
I had a hard time figuring out how I wanted the first chapter to be and I’m not really sure if this is what it should have turned out to be or not….. I should probably revise a lot of it though, but it’s just a rough draft really. I promise it will get to be more interesting later on. I’ll add fight scenes or something more interesting, but this was just supposed to introduce my two main characters is all. I still need to work on their personalities some more. And the story will make more sense later as well. So thanks for taking the time to look at this.

Chapter 1. Telepath

Tears filled her eyes and blood dripped through her hands. She couldn’t believe it. Everything was lost now. Aerin fell to her knees on the ground as she touched his hand gently. It felt like ice. She screamed. How could this have happened? she thought. What had gone wrong? His face was so pale, so white. His shirt was covered in blood from the wound in his chest. She stared at his soft, quiet face that was devoid of life. The only thing she could think of was the night that they had met…

* * * * * *

The streets were soaked with rain and thunder roared overhead. The cold rain drenched Aerin’s hair but she ignored it. Cars sped past her and she could hear sirens ringing in the background of the enormous city that lay out before her. She passed by buildings that stretched far up into the night sky, making it impossible to see the stars above her.

It was almost nine o’clock, so she knew that she still had some time before the gates to her school were locked for the night. She glanced to her right, at the traffic that raced past her. She wasn’t really looking at the traffic, though. Her mind was caught in another place, beyond the sight of the world around her.

She was tired. Her whole life felt like a tired confusion of memories ever since her sister…

Aerin sighed, trying to bring herself back to where she was. This whole city had once felt so vibrant, so filled with life. Her older sister had been so excited when she found out that Aerin was going to the same school as her. Aerin could still remember her smile, her laugh. It had almost been a year since that day…

An ambulance rushed past her on the street. Its sirens blared and its wind shield wipers were frantically trying to push the rain from the windows. Aerin pulled her dark jacket around her more tightly but she already knew that her school uniform had been soaked in the rain. Each footstep took her closer and closer back to the apartment, back to the place where she had last seen her sister before her fatal fall into death.

Each second of that night had felt so long, so slow, so confusing. Aerin had walked through the door into the apartment and seen her sister kneeling on the ground, a knife in her hand. Her sister had been screaming, crying, her hands drenched in blood as she leaned over the edge of the window. Aerin remembered herself running towards her, yelling for her to stop, when suddenly, her sister had looked at her one last time before letting go. All of that pain that she had held inside had suddenly, irrevocably been erased in that second. The crimson knife had been lying still on the floor. The window had been opened wide into the night sky where the curtains were blowing in the wind. But her sister had gone over the edge, no longer herself any more. Aerin remembered running to the window sill, looking over in panic, but she saw nothing in the street thirty floors below.

The rest of that night and the weeks after were a haze of confusion. Aerin had been told by the police that no body had been recovered and they were stunned as to how that could be. Aerin didn’t care about anything anymore. She just wanted her sister back.

Nothing had ever seemed real again.

Aerin was brought back to reality when she realized that she was standing at the edge of the street corner. The cross walk sign was blinking for her to go and people rushed past her across the street. Aerin stared at the symbol of the walking man for a second. Her apartment at the school was only a few blocks away after she crossed this intersection.

Aerin sighed and instead of crossing the familiar street back to her room, she turned left and continued down the block. Once she came to the edge of that street, she just kept going. There was no one at the apartment waiting for her. She was all alone.

The blinding rain did not cease as she neared an older, unfamiliar section of the city. The buildings were broken down and paint was peeling off of them; some even looked abandoned. Aerin could see no lights on in any of the houses or stores and only a few people could be seen wandering the streets. The only light that illuminated the streets were the few street lamps that had not been broken.

The rain had begun to cease as she continued to walk and the clouds that concealed the moon were beginning to move apart. Aerin finally came to the end of the street and gazed up.

In front of her was a beautiful, gothic cathedral. The light from the moon fell across it to display an intricate tapestry of artwork. Angels and roses had been carved into its walls, casting an array of innocence onto the dark stone. The front of the structure rose up in a magnificent arch of stained glass and the light that reflected from it made the panes appear as though they sparkled.

A cathedral. The house of God. It seemed as though this was what she had been searching for…

A long stairway led up to the cathedral’s doors. Aerin slowly began to ascend it, thinking of nothing; she felt numb. She took another step, her attention focused solely on the front of the cathedral. Finally, she came to the last step and went towards the double doors, reaching her hand out to the handle. She pulled her hand back in an attempt to open the door, but it could not be budged.

“It’s locked,” a quiet voice said from behind her. Quickly, Aerin turned to see a young man standing on the top step with her. The light fell across his head of brown hair and reflected off his pale green eyes.

The boy stared at her, his expression gentle, but his face held only the trace of a smile. Her attention was drawn to him, at his unexpected presence. His hair almost fell to his shoulders and moved slightly in the wind. His torn, black jacket and ripped jeans gave her the impression that he had been through a lot.

The seconds passed with neither of them speaking. Aerin was unsure of what to do next. She could not take her eyes from his face. Slowly, Aerin took her hand away from the door and glanced past the young man in front of her. “It’s locked, I see. Okay, well, I guess I should be going then,” she quickly said, looking up to meet his gaze.

The young man’s face erupted into a wide smile, but his eyes appeared haunted by something she could not see. “Please, wait. There’s something I have to tell you,” he began. He stared at her with his jaded eyes. “There’s no need to be afraid.” His voice came as almost a whisper. “I’m also a Telepath.”

Aerin looked at him in shock. She could hardly believe what she had just heard. “You…you are?” Her voice was barely audible. A Telepath. Besides herself, there was only one other person she knew that was a Telepath. And that was her sister.
