Annoying art trends
Seems like there are cardinal sins in a lot of things. Art is no exception.

Skye River's Annoying art trends:

1. Photoshop's "four pointed star"
This is usually seen this in anime wallpapers and other places where it's considered "unnecessary". It's easy to make, but has no realistic application. Real glare doesn't shine like the star in Bethlehem.

2. "Dodge & Burn" in anime eyes
I have nothing against cel shading. However, I can't stand to look at anime fanart where the eyes are the only thing that took the most effort.

3. "Lens Flares"
This is like a hot poker in your eye. If you don't know how to use it right - don't. There are rare times where this filter is used right. People tend to abuse this filter a lot.

4. "Photoshop "Filter>Render>Clouds"
Please DO NOT use this filter. I would rather see you make your own clouds with an airbrush & smudge tool.

5. Art with no backgrounds
No backgrounds makes an artist a lazy person. If you can't draw scenery, at least put some color into it somehow. Spider-Man needs to have buildings in the background. Otherwise, he's floating in space...

6. People not being proud of every sketch or finished pic they make (regardless of its beauty)
This is common in DeviantArt. If you despise it, then why is it there ? Nobody is forcing you to update your gallery. Take your time and work it out.

7. Stolen art/fanart used in people's profiles, websites, and guild/signature banners
It's not yours, end of story.

8. People taking shortcuts to learning art and software
This happens a lot here in the Art Forum. There are two sides to this debate;

* You want to learn, but you're having a hard time. (most cases I will help here)
or
* You want to learn, but you don't WANT to take time to learn the basics.

Everyone learns at their own pace which is true. Unfortunately, there are those that ignore the basics such as perspective, anatomy, shading, etc. This holds true to anime artists that think this is the ONLY style of art.

There are help menus in your programs, stickies in the art forum, and various guides that can help you get started. Please read them before posting your topic.

9. Whoring your DeviantArt site in the art forum
There are several places to plug your website: Profile, sig, journal, guilds, and auction threads. I doubt that the "promotions" sub forum allows anymore DeviantArt links because of too many people not reading the rules.

10. Copic bandwagon
You: Yay ! I got Copic markers for Christmas !!1eleventeen !!1!! *does the eggnog cabbage patch*
Me:You got Copics for Chrsitmas ? Wow, that's nice. Did you get a whole set ?
You: No, I just got the colors I need for anime art.
Me; -_-;

Are they the only medium for making anime art ? No ! Just because it's from Japan doesn't make you a better manga-ka.

11. Elitists
The internet has advantages over everyday life; You can't see a person's face or hear their voice. However, it is a place to echo your thoughts. Sometimes, some people tend to echo some form of personal resentment or bad art experience to that artist. this is where the elitist fits in the dictionary.

There's a saying in the House of Blues, "Unity in Diversity". People shouldn't think of themselves higher than another one because of skill or experience. Always remember that every artist has different strengths and weaknesses. This leads to the next thing in mind...

12. Improper constructive critiques
A critique is meant to point out different things. What makes it a "constructive critique" is to point out flaws and ADVISE that artist on how to correct them. Show them by sketching with what you're explaining to them or doing something in Photoshop. Any pre-bias of an art style of subtle tones in flaming online or in person defeats that purpose.

13. Praising of graffiti art
Unless you're doing it for a community project (or some other positive form), it's vandalism. Tagging is no different. If you want to make a name for yourself, do it right. I'd hate to see someone with so much potential find themselves wasting their talents. Nobody will call you a "sellout" if you're successful in life. I'm saying this from personal experience...

14. No inspiration
A topic repeated ad nauseum. The solution will always be the same ... stop doing it and do something else. It will eventually come to you.

15. I don't know how to draw
Nike said it best in their slogan, "Just do it." If a person can paint with their left foot, you can do it. Grab a pencil, a sketchbook and go for it. Enhance your learning by taking an art class or two.

16. Abuse of design patterns
- Screentones. Do it like manga-kas do in Japan, manually. Don't be a slave to Photoshop. If your art doesn't shine as it is, then you have a problem.
- Textures. Don't think you can fool me with using the same texture on a different pic.
- Brushes. Grass and leaf brushes...predictable.
