RAWR. Christmas Eve. The happiest time of the year. And I am... bored.
Story for joo!
She found herself standing on a deserted beach at sunset, on top of one of two sandy cliffs overlooking the ocean. Arcs of pink and orange cloud floated on the horizon, suspended in mid-air. An emerald carpet of crabgrass curled away behind her. A wonderful dream, but something was missing.
She took a step forward, not realizing that she had just stepped off the edge of the peak she was standing on. The girl tumbled down the side in an unruly sort of way, landing in a messy heap at the bottom. She lay still there for a few moments, gasping heavily, then dragged herself up reluctantly.
A boat bobbed soundlessly about 35 feet from the shore, and it took her a while to notice it. Two figures, their faces and bodies shadowed in the dying light, lounged inside. She could barely make out their features, but it appeared as if one, a man, held two paddles. A woman sat across from him in the boat, toting a basket or purse of some sort.
It was then that she realized what was wrong. There was no sound, no lapping of waves and swish of grass or call of birds. This world lacked noise.
The girl stepped forward and reached out to the boat, flinching as her feet touched the icy water, but she could not go far before stopping of the cold. But weak as she was, she had to go on. She felt pulled toward the boat, like metal to a magnet.
The man began to paddle. First slowly, then faster, and faster. The girl was having trouble keeping up, and at last she gave in to weak knees, shivering as the water wet her nightdress.
The woman smiled and waved to her. The girl felt a longing for her, so simple, yet unexplainable. She could do nothing but watch, and in minutes the boat had disappeared over the horizon.
Narissa awoke to the sounds of traffic. Then it all came back to her, and she gasped. Had that been her mother, waving to her in the dying sunlight? She looked down at her feet, searching for an answer, and gasped again. She was kneeling, chest-deep, in the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean.
"Look, I don’t know how it happened, okay?"
"Well, whatever it was, just don’t do it again, all right?"
Narissa wrapped the towel more snugly around her shoulders and mumbled, "I don’t know if it’s a choice, really."
"Just try is all I ask." Her sister paused, turned Narissa’s head around to face her, and touched her cheek gently. "Please. I don’t know what everyone will think about this. Since I’m in charge of you, please... Don’t tell anyone this happened," she whispered.
Narissa sighed. "All right." She let her head fall back onto the chair.
She sat in her living room, resting as a television show played out before her eyes: something she would normally watch, but she found it hard to concentrate.
