On this day while I admire my garden of strawberries I notice that many of the flowers are short and yellow but I don’t have much tall and green so I decide to look for some thing to put so I could have more green. I ride my bike down the street to a small market run by an elderly man and his wife. There store has a gardening section towards the back and continues outside the store. I lean my bike next to the bike rail and run to the door. It was a heavy door but I managed to open it with a pull. “Good morning” I say with a simile to the old man at the counter. “Welcome. Take your time.” I walk to the back of the store and push the door that lead outside. The sun was behind a soft gray cloud and it spread its shadow across the store. I walked along the ales where colorful flowers grew in bunches of 6 and in pots. I looked across the rows and spotted something tall and green against the wall. I went to it. There I saw some rather odd looking plants. Its leaves were tall and skinny with tall stocks shot out from the middles. I decide this was the plant that would make a new addition to the garden and peered down at the name tags on the sides of the buckets. ‘Cat Tail’ it said. “Hehe, cute name.” I grabbed 4 of the gallon buckets with the weakest looking plants. I knew that they wouldn’t last much longer in those gallon buckets and with a little loving care they would look even better then the greener plants in the other gallon buckets. So I grabbed them and carried them to the front desk. The old man there looked at the withering plants “Those plants are no good why don’t you get the livelier ones? Here ill hold these here so you don’t have to carry then back.” I shook my head and held on to the plants I chose. “No thanks these will do vary well in my garden.” I said with a smile. “Ohh… ok if you say so.” He started to take the tags off and type in the codes to the computer. “Tell you what since these plant are dea…umm are not as healthy as the others I’ll give you a discount.” He said with a wink to the lady across the way. “Thanks” I said as I handed him some dollars and change. I took the plants and put them into individual plastic bags the tall greenish brown leaves bushed out of the tops. Then walked to the heavy doors which I pushed open with my shoulder, and walking to my bike on the rail. I hung 2 plants on each of the handle bars and I climbed on. The plants tickled my hands as they reached out of the bags. The traffic was light still and the ride home was smooth and quick. I rolled around to the back and opened the wooden gate that separated the garden form the street. Parking my bike inside the gate I took the plants out of the bags and carried the 4 of them to the spot where I wanted more green. Across the garden under a river rock arch where the path snaked throw there were 4 holes about a foot in diameter. I had presoaked them so that the ground would be moist when I put the new plants. I set the cat tails along the path and picked the 2 that would go on the right side of the arch and the 2 that would go on the left. I gently twisted them out of there cramped buckets and found that the roots were densely over grown at the bottoms of the buckets. I loosened the roots so that they dangled downward and were not in a tite circle. I then trimmed the ones that were the longest making them all a reasonable length. I put them in the holes with fresh dirt so that they would stand striate about 2 inches below the surface. Then I put a couple river rocks on the edges to that they would look natural under the arch. With the tops now rid of the dead leaves the green shown much brighter and with a shower of water from the water pail I knew that these Cat Tails would be a nice green addition to all the yellow around it. 4laugh
