If you're an elder goth like myself you've been in the scene for many, many years. I literally just typed 'elder bat' which I'm actually quite digging. Anyways, elder bat, elder goth, whatever, if you're 25+ then odds are you may have been into goth for 10+ years or so. I'm now in my late 30s and started to dabble in the early 2000s. For me, I've been at least delving into it since 2006, so almost 20 years now. That being said.... I feel old lol.
Anyways, there are many things that make me feel nostalgia for when I was first getting into goth. Now mind you, not everything on my personal list may be considered to be "actually goth" or whatever, but the point nonetheless is that it was something I associated with it back in the day when I was just learning and starting out. My baby bat years if you will.
Here is my personal goth nostalgia list.
Music:
Sick ******** by Unter Null (Can't add as lyrics aren't Gaia friendly.)
(There use to be a video which had this song footage of PomPeii but it seems to have sadly been deleted.)
Emilie Autumn, Evanescence and Within Temptation are also very nostalgic to me.
Goth Types:
Pastel goth. I remember when pastel and nu goth first came out. That was during my edgy years in 2008-2009. Seeing pastel goth is usually always nostalgic for me. Cyber goth is also nostalgic to me as it was one of the first different goth types that I learned of.
Myspace & old gothic graphics:
Gothers
There use to be a site called gothers.com that has long since been taken down. Iirc it was because of financial reasons. It was a Netherlands based website that was pretty much like a goth version of Myspace. Sadly there are no images of their logos or anything and I wasn't able to find anything with the Way Back Machine either.
Vampire Freaks:
Vampire Freaks was another 'goth Myspace.' I don't recall if I had an account on there but I would often see advertisements for their site all over the place.
South Park's Goth Kids:
I especially remember when the season 12 episode, The Ungroundable came out featuring the goth kids vs the vamp kids and was where the iconic burning down Hot Topic scene came from. It's def a classic and every so often I will rewatch it as well as other goth kids episodes.
Random goth characters in media:
I have some fond memories of watching cartoons like Danny Phantom with its goth character Sam and even more so, The Venture Brothers with its goth character Triana. I'm always thrilled to see goth characters in media and ones from back in the day that I enjoyed, I will always find to be nostalgic.
Movies:
The Craft, Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice and Gypsy83 were some I enjoyed and that will always be nostalgic to me. I also always love when movies have a random goth character in it. For example, Pulse 2006 has a random goth girl for a quick scene in a cafe.
My Immortal:
This was a comically, terribly written Harry Potter fan fic with a goth girl as the main character. It was absolute gold. If you haven't heard of it, I implore you to watch this video by Internet Historian. It's epic.
"Goths vs Preps":
This is still absolute gold to me and even in my younger years I didn't take it seriously. On the extremely rare occasion I hear someone utter something of this, it not only amuses me greatly, but it's also nostalgic.
The Twilight Hate Saga:
I remember when that movie first came out and all the hate it got from so many young goths who were being edgy. I was among them but I didn't take it nearly as seriously as a lot of them did.
Hot Topic:
Hot Topic was notorious for creating what's known as the "mall goth." Back in the day there was always something cool to be found there. They use to have things from Tripp pants, fishnets, to random Invader Zim merch which will always be nostalgic to me.
Goth YouTubers:
Vamprassjarat was the first goth YouTuber I found long ago. She also introduced me to Jillian Venters' Gothic Charm School. Another of the first channels I got into was Leah Mouse.
GaiaOnline:
Gaia has always been goth friendly and has always had loads of goths and many still have their old school profiles which are always nostalgic for me to come across.
