We as a group stay roughly on the top two floors of the building itself as much for safety being able to contact one another as much as to defend ourselves if we need to lock down the hallways an out room/ apartment doors.

I guess Ill tell you about our colony then,
First off a guy that goes by Tex-mex. He was originally from out west an had moved to the coast a few years before the war broke out. He is the oldest of our Colony probably in his 50's likely. He acts as a sort of Maintenance Guy as he's really handy with wiring an engineering.
If we have a short or fuse go out or the likes he's the one we call. Was one that helped fix up the solar panel wiring originally an jeery-rig it into the buildings wiring grid.
Also helps mediate any disagreements along with the next survivor Ill tell you about.

Ella a young lady in her late 20's who is awesome organizational wizard an record keeper, who had been a baby as the war broke out but had been kept safe as her an her mother fled the war to stay in Governmental Shelters that dotted the landscape outside of several major cities...hers being in the Southern US.
She is sharp an able to remember anything she has heard or read immediately as she has taken it in. She helps Tex-Mex keep order an as well acts as our colony's historian an information keeper.
Of course her memory an attention to detail an whats going on helps Tex-Mex when he's wiring things or just generally trying to deal with a complicated project he is working on.
