First entry is about my pottery studio. I do wheel thrown pottery. I work with a variety of stoneware clays (a brown speckled clay, a typical light stoneware, and a composite stoneware & porcelain). My finished products are fired at cone 5/6.
I'm in the process of creating my own, self-sufficient studio at my house. I'm starting out in a small room in my basement but my hubby and I are remodeling an old utility building to move closer to my kiln shed in the back of the yard. This will greatly cut down on the distance I presently have to go from moving the greenware (clay which has been air dried and is, at times, fragile) to the kiln.
The name of my studio is Mud Puppy Pottery. Meet my dog Mick, a 8 year old Australian Shepherd. Mick is the inspiration for the studio's name. As most people know, wheel thrown pottery is a messy business. After all, what is clay but big lumps of semi-solid mud. Unfortunately for Mick, he isn't like most people and found out about this first hand, or paw, that is. After cleaning up the wheel area, Mick had to be cleaned up too. And, to Mick, B-A-T-H is definitely a four-letter word in his ever-growing vocabulary.
Mick is the CEO (Canine Extra-Ordinaire) of Mud Puppy Pottery. He oversees all the main operations - throwning, glazing, and firing. He is also head of Security. Lizards and other critters are always trying to sneak a peek into the work area.
