i put the cd in, press play, and
the world fades to nothingness
as the drums begin to pound in my veins,
nerves humming to the beat.
physical existence loses its corporeality,
soundwaves forming a new plane
upon which i now stand,
heartbeats indistinguishable
from the ever-present bass.
just let me lose myself
for an hour, a half, a quarter,
drifting away on the guitar melody
as gravity dissolves
for lack of mass to create it.
i'm omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent;
the shift of a whim, the click of a button
determining the fate of this reality
where everything is finally as it seems
and earth's lies are washed clear
by waves in the ocean of music.
then the jagged rocks of a broken guitar solo
break the tide of the pulsing bass,
and the cymbals crash out of time
as the singer's voice skips a line,
and my truthful oblivion fragments
as the disc spins itself out of the tray.
