Text 1:
Bakeneko has been rendered in English in a variety of ways. Monster cat. Ghost cat. But the most accurate translation would be “Changing Cat,” as that is the defining characteristic of bakeneko, because of their shape-shifting abilities, bakeneko belong to a class of youkai called henge, or changing youkai. This includes other shape-shifters such as tanuki and kitsune. They are a fabled cat with supernatural powers, such as raising the dead, entering one's dreams, warping it's surrounding, and similar abilities. It is rumored to play with and haunt, and even devour humans for fun. Some stories even have the them raise its own victims from the dead in order to trap others or to use as a distraction to escape. And its even been said that when a Bakeneko has lived for a 1000 years, it becomes a Nekomata, a two-tailed version of the Bakeneko that is said to somehow even be more dangerous.
Text 2:
When a housecat lives for over 10 years, it may become a Bakeneko (aka Nekomata). Bakeneko stand upright and their tails split into two, as well as gaining magical powers and a gradual increase in size. While a very few Bakeneko can be comfortable to remain in their normal roles as pets, others hold grudges against their masters and use their magic to seek their revenge.
Using shapeshifting powers, a Bekeneko may kill its master and then take their place pretending to be human. These fake humans can be identified by their rude behavior and a strange menacing feeling that follows them around. Despite pretending to be human, they will doubtlessly hunt them for food.
Others will, instead of killing their masters, torment them. They use their magic to reanimate the dead loved ones of their masters, and control them. They will haunt their household until appeased by gifts of food and attention.

In some Japanese legends the bakeneko are referred to as good spirits, wishing to help the humans that have cared for them in the past. Stories exist of cats taking the form of women and girls in order to become wives for lonely male owners, or daughters to childless couples. How a normal cat is supposed to become a bakeneko varies a bit from story to story. For most, it requires that the cat has had a long life and that it has lived and been fed in the same place for that time, becoming particularly large - but the theories of how long and how large differ greatly. They also have the ability to eat anything in their way, regardless of size or edibility, this includes humans. Their main food is poison, particularly a certain snake unknown to humankind.

According to Japanese folklore, a cat (neko) that has lived for a long time can become a kind of youkai called a nekomata (猫叉). It was believed that after a cat reached ten years of age, its tail would slowly split into two tails, and, along the way, it would develop magic powers, primarily those of necromancy and shamanism. Nekomata also have an ability to shape shift into a human form and are generally hostile to humans.
There is also one kind of Nekomata that lived in Nabeshimahan (鍋島藩), which lived long enough to split its tail six times, resulting in seven tails. It is the most powerful nekomata in Japan.
