July 30, 2011: Not Working Out
Enrique and Britty had a huge fight last night, and now we're worrying that we won't be able to keep him.

First off, I was on the phone with Nannette last night around ten when out of nowhere Britty comes running with Enrique chasing after her. She jumped up on the couch and started hissing, and then Enrique jumped up after her and started whapping her. Britty started growling and whapped him back. I freaked out and screamed at them, and then I think maybe mom pulled him off of her but I can't really be sure. All I know is then Enrique was on the floor staring up at her and Britty was puffed up and hissing. I told Nannette I had to go, because we had to figure out what had happened.

Funny tidbit: Nannette and I had been talking about balls of gum, and just before I started screaming at the cats she had mentioned how cool it would be to have a ball of gum that was five fiit in diameter. When I started screaming, she said, "Woah, Cat, it's not that cool!"

Anyway, we came to the conclusion that Britty is hissing and this sets Enrique into agressive mode, and when he goes into agressive mode he doesn't relent. It became my job to watch them after everyone else went to sleep.

Britty was in Mom's room and Enrique was on the couch. He was fine for hours, just being playful and climbing his Kitty Climbing Tree. At this point, he was napping. It was about four in the morning when Britty came out to eat in the kitchen, and the moment she was there he jumped from his seat and ran at her. She hissed and jumped under the table onto a chair and he ran at her and stood on the floor stretched up and swatting at her. I ran in and started shouting at him and her, because even after I'd run in and pulled him away she was hissing and growling. I put him in the living room and shouted at him, telling him he needs to leave her alone.

And let me take a moment to say that I know shouting isn't helping anything. But I was terrified! Britty is declawed, and Enrique isn't. He could potentially really hurt her and she has no way to defend herself. I know Enrique is just curious, but I'm going to side with Britty. She's been my cat longer. She's just scared and wants him to leave her alone, and he's the one who keeps going at her.

Anyway, after their fight Enrique kept going into the kitchen and trying to go up to Britty. I kept getting in his way and pushing him back, but then he'd try to find a different way to her. Every time I picked him up and took him to a different room he'd just run back and we'd be back where we started. I was getting fed up with this because I really needed to clean the litter box, which I can't do while they're fighting. Eventually I cleaned it, but he was still going at her. It had been thirty minutes since the fight, and he was STILL going at her. I picked him up and was taking him to my room when he started biting my arm. I put him down on the bed but like always he went running back. This time he tried to go around the back of the table, and I stuck my hand in front of him to hold him off.

Now for the fun part. Britty was wigging out, and Enrique was already mad at me for holding him so much. All of the stress got to him I guess, because he slashed me with his claws, pulled my hand down, and bit me. I've been bitten before, but not like this. He broke my skin with all four of his big teeth. It was like I'd been stabbed in four places.

I wasn't about to let him get away with that, so I smacked him. In retrospect I probably shouldn't have done that, but I was angry and frightened. So I smacked him anyway.

Pause the story for a moment. I have to explain why I'm so scared. Enrique was found, as you may know, in a sewer pipe. So he could be carrying all sorts of diseases. This would have been taken care of if Nannette's dad had taken him to get his shots, but he never did. I don't know why he didn't, but then I also don't know why he never got Enrique fixed. The point is, Enrique could potentially carry E. Coli or who knows what. I don't know what E. Coli really is, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to catch it.

Alright, so, back to the action. I picked Enrique up again and I thought about locking him in the bathroom. I decided not to, though, because I knew that I was angry and emotional and needed to wait a minute before I did anything drastic. Instead, I knocked on Mom's door and explained the situation. She brought me some antibacterial stuff and a band-aid, and I washed my hand and put the stuff on it. Steph came out too, and by this time I had dissolved into tears. I'm not really sure why.

I told them what had been going on during the past half-hour, and they told me to go to sleep and that Mom would watch them. Great minds think alike, because Mom was also mad at Enrique and they ended up locking him in the bathroom. He didn't like it, but Britty needed to eat and she never would with him around.

I went to sleep, and when I woke up Mom told me that after Enrique was let out, he continued trying to get at Britty. Nothing would stop him. Stephanie now has him in her room, and his bed and Kitty Climbing Tree are in there too. Mom's friends Nick and Scott said that we should keep them separated for a week, so that's what we're doing. Mom's also going to look into Enrique getting fixed, because she's sure he'll be less agressive after that.

I hope it works out, because if it doesn't we won't be able to keep him. That's really the only option at this point.
