I'm curled up inside my Tetris blocks at the moment, thinking and writing...
Cindy brought the camera yesterday, and Mike, the GAIA 9 helicopter pilot, came with her to help us set it up. The camera is perched on a buttress sticking out of the roof, with a perfect view of the top of the clock tower, but nearly invisible from the tower or the street. It has a long battery and a tape inside that loops every 24 hours, and I can just ignore it untill the Sniper strikes again. When he does, I have to take the tape out of the camera at once and head to Barton to give it to Cindy. Even though my roof faces the opposite side of the tower from the one the Sniper shot from, it's not really a problem because there's no way of knowing what one he'll use this time. As Mike said, it all depends on what the target is. The only thing I don't like about this plan is that we have to wait untill the Sniper strikes again. It's not that I don't think he will, I just wish we could stop him beforehand. However, I can't think of any better plan, so...
That isn't what's really worrying me though. To write about that, I have to go back in time, to the days when I lived in Aekea...
I am not completely human. At least not completely normal human. That be became clear five years ago, when I was ten. That's when I started sleepwalking, and having strange dreams of roaming the city at night, frightening people, hurting them, and, in the end, killing and eating one. The thing was, at that time, a strange creature was reported roaming Aekea at night...a creature with the body of a child and the head of a monster. A blackish monster with a large head and glowing red eyes...but the body was that of a little girl. After an extreamly nasty death that was blamed on malfuntioning robots, the monster dissapeared, and the matter was forgotten. Except by me. I had woken one too many times sitting on my bed with the lights on and the window open, with blood on my hands and strange dreams on my mind, knowing what would be on the news that morning... My parents knew too, but they refused to accept it, and never talked about it to me, although I know it worried them horribly. After the death, I planned to run away into the wilderness where I couldn't hurt anybody, but from then on I always awoke in my bed, and when the monster dissapeared, so did my dreams. For five years, I made myself belive it hadn't happened...but now it's happening again. And this time it's happening in Durem, where there are no malfuntioning robots!
I should have written about this side of me before now, but I wanted to pretend it didn't exist. Now I have to, since it's been going on every night since Wensday night. The first two nights, I only scared people. From then on, I've woken with blood on my hands and dreams of feeding. Although the news hasn't been very interested yet, and nobody seems to have remembered the monster of Aekea, there have been little bits of news about people being hurt by a strange creature with the head of a monster and the body of a young woman...
I know that soon, perhaps even tonight, there will be a death. And though it may once more free me from my monsterous side, there will be trouble. Big trouble. After all, Durem is a very different place from Aekea...
I feel sorry for the city. Isn't one killer enough?
I also feel sorry for myself. How can I hope to catch the Sniper while I'm...this?
