Separation
It rang out in the night waking me from my slumber. That constant sorrowful howling. I shifted where I laid on the edge of the forest before slowly opening my eyes and peering up into the starry night sky, trying to wrap my mind around where I was. When it howled again, I shivered recognizing the mournful sound. Each night I'd hear that pained howl ring out through the woods. It would go on endlessly until the morning, never changing in tone and leave me feeling empty. Gently I pushed myself up off the forest floor, brushing bits of moss and twigs from my hair when the howl sounded again. I turned my eyes to the forest and peered into the dark as far as I could see.

Nothing. Only the blackened shadows of night.

I didn't quite know what I was expecting to see. Someone there maybe, or even the howler? I squinted a moment before waiting for another howl. When the howl came again, I felt something inside me break this time. I felt like crying out, even howling back. There was familiarity in that howl. Why didn't I realize it before? Before I knew it, I was rushing through the woods as fast as my legs would carry me, leaping over fallen trees and rocks. My heart pounded as tears began brimming in my eyes as I pushed through the brush. My heart ached when I heard his howl again. He was so far away from me. I looked around quickly, trying to determine the next path to take when my eyes caught movement to my left.

Carefully I turned my attention in it's direction, only to see a man pointing a rifle at me. He said nothing, but his eyes spoke for him.

Die.

He shot at me and I yelped and ran, dodging another bullet that was aimed for my chest. I ran and ran, not daring to look back for fear he would be there. The howl sounded again, this time closer. My heart ached as I could make out the edge of the forest. Lights from a nearby town lit up the edge, guiding me to him. Before I knew it, I let out a long howl, finally answering his calls. As I stepped out into the light I could see him standing there, his head raised and his amber eyes focused on me.

Those familiar eyes.

Slowly he shifted out of his skin, instantly becoming the one I knew. I stood there, mouth agape as I fought for words. I was finally here with him. I began to weep uncontrollably before running into his arms. It was like coming home. How long had we been separated? Days? Months? Years? He brushed my hair and kissed the top of my head before whispering in my ear, Welcome home. And just like that, I was complete again.
