It was 1:35 A.M. Nadine was fast asleep in her bed. She was awakened by the smell of smoke and gasoline. She opened her eyes to a horrific site, her house was in flames. She immediately got up from her bed and ran for her fathers room. She opened the door, but her father was gone. She ran down the stairs to the front door, not thinking about her feet which were blistering from the smoldering ground. Flames were everywhere, She would have thought she was in the depths of hell, which she had learned about a few days before from Nathan. Nadine reached for the handle, but winced with pain for the handle was as hot as the fire itself. Again Nadine tried and push as hard as she could on the door, But it didn’t open. She ran for the back door, but was stopped by a wall of flames in the hallway. She again turned for the front door, but it too had been enveloped by flames. She was trying to think, but she had no time to. She ran for the window above the kitchen sink, which was filled with dirty dishes that her father had left for her to do in the morning. She tried to push up on the window, but it didn’t budge, then she pounded on the window screaming for help, everything happened so fast, she was breathing heavily, and soon, she couldn’t breath at all. she fell to the floor, gasping for air. Then everything began to slow down. She saw what looked to be a person glowing in the flames, but blacked out before she could make out the image.
You could see the light and smell the smell of smoke from all the way across town. Nathan woke around 2 A.M. He saw the flames from his window and automatically knew its location. He shot up from his bed and ran outside. He grabbed his bike and pedaled towards Nadine’s house. There were firemen and policemen scattered all along the road. The water from the firemen’s hoses looked like silver snakes shimmering against the light of the fire. A fireman bust through the front door and went inside the house. Soon he walked again through the door, this time with the limp body of a girl in his arms. Nathan Knew who the limp body belonged to. He ran to the firemen and past all of the police officers who were trying to stop him. He got to the fireman, whom was telling him to back away from the house. “She’s my girl friend!” shouted Nathan over the roar of the flames. The fireman looked to the paramedic, who hesitantly nodded. “Fine, you can ride with her in the ambulance.” replied the fireman as the paramedic put Nadine’s lifeless body on the gurney. The paramedics then helped Nathan up into the ambulance. Nathan wrapped his hands around Nadine’s. He prayed, this time not because of routine, but because he needed to. Her life depended on it. He knew that if she died now, she wouldn’t find the beautiful light of heaven. Nathan had been taught for years that Jesus was the pathway to heaven. He hadn’t taught her about that yet. He wanted to tell her closer to December, and it was the beginning of June. Nathan looked at Nadine’s face. He hesitated, but lifted his index finger and pressed it under the side of her chin. And it was exactly what he had dreaded, she had no pulse. They got to the hospital at 2:32 A.M. and the paramedics lifted Nadine out of the ambulance. Nathan followed close behind. They rushed Nadine up to the emergency room. Nathan wasn’t allowed in, instead he just sat outside the door He kept hearing the shouts of the doctors and nurses inside. Nathan had his head buried beneath his hands. “Dear father, if you let this broken soul live, I will do all in my power to be a better christian and a messenger. Please hear my cries and the cries of all the souls who didn’t have a chance and let her have another.” The shouts from the emergency room stopped, then, one by one, the nurses left the room. Nathan could hear the doctors talking inside the room. “Cause and time of death?”asked one of the doctors. “Carbon Monoxide poisoning at approximately 1:40 A.M.” replied the other. Nathan got up from his seat and walked over to the open door. He looked inside to see a man put Nadine into a body bag.
This is a chapter from a story I'm writing. It's not that depressing as it is in this chapter, it has a cheerful ending. If this gets a good response, I will post the the entire story from the beginning. Thank you for your time
