Personality (brief): Serious, reserved and somewhat shy, intelligent/calculating, exacting, decisive, cold, inviting yet simultaneously unapproachable, well-mannered, polite. On the inside vulnerable and sensitive, takes things rather too personally, not manipulative
Personality (extended): From afar, she appears to be warm and gentle. Her childlike face and ladylike manner cause many to underestimate her. Yet we find she can become incredibly cold and vengeful. She is neurotic because she is afraid of her emotions taking control of her. Despite her attempts to bottle up her emotions/conscience and keep everyone distant, she becomes easily and uncontrollably attached to people. In fact, deep down, she know that she is not very strong and far more dependent on others than she would like to be for her survival.
Bere's beauty is unrivaled, and though she must know it, she does not really care for her appearances. It's rumored that her smile can melt a heart of stone, but most of the time, she is stoic or serious. In fact, she will never resort to her beauty and charm to get what she wants - even if it would be easier to do so. She has that certain disregard and indifference for the material, yet she ironically leads an extravagant, ostentatious lifestyle.
Despite the somewhat lofty attitude, Berenice has great respect for the little things in life. She does not take anything for granted and appreciates the moments. She works to help others in trouble and give them hope though at times her frustration makes this difficult.
Bere's neurosis stems from her contract with Darcy, whom she needs and yet despises the feeling of authority he exerts over her. Although he is at her disposal, she is secretly afraid of his power and what he is capable of. She does not want to give him her soul, or more potentially her heart.
History:
Berenice was the illegitimate child between a nobleman and his mistress, a kept woman famous for her irresistible charm and beauty. The nobleman was already married to a very wealthy entrepreneur's daughter, from whom he obtained his fortune. When he discovers that his mistress is bearing a child, he quickly tells her to "dispose of it" and she refuses. In an attempt to rid the child that could ruin his reputation and his status, he coldly turns on her and viciously pursues her. She is able to escape from him until she gives birth. For ten years the mother and child fled from place to place - destitute, homeless - until the nobleman's henchmen find them.
They attack the mother but are unable to find the child hidden away. They leave her to bleed to death and at that moment, she calls out for divine assistance. What arrives is a demon. She wants to make a contract, but he does not want her soul. So, she offers the soul of her young daughter in exchange for a long, painful revenge upon the nobleman and all his relations. He is surprised by her cruelty; he asks her if she would be willing to sacrifice her own child's soul for her revenge. The mother replies that the revenge of one is the revenge of another; that she and the child are one. He is skeptical, but Berenice - bewildered and desperate to help her mother - agrees to a contract (without knowing the cost it entails). They seal the contract. She is marked above her chest (over her sternum).
He promises to watch over Berenice until she is ready to exact her mother's revenge and become his for the taking. He helps Bere claim fortune and status, and raises her to become a woman of great appeal and reputation.
Berenice, however, grows up lonely and yearning. When she was a child, she tried desperately to challenge her ultimate fate. But when she realizes how powerful the contract is, she grudgingly resigns to her doom. She still wants to live for her soul is very precious to her, but she instead vows to get her revenge on the condition to never give her heart away - least of all - the demon Darcy.
