Her hands tightened around his throat. She feels him trying to breath, trying to get air. He lets out gargling choking noises. She laughs a bitter sweet laugh. “You will never hurt me again. You will never hurt me again,” she repeats over and over as he stops struggling. She can feel his spirit break free of his body. Feel it leave from its captive shell. She stepped away and looked at the body before her. The man who had bought her, the man who owned her… the man who is dead, the man who will never give her an order again, never raise his hand at her. She laughed again and picked up the butcher knife on the kitchen counter and begins to cut him open. Each swing was met with the sound of mettle breaking bone and the splash of blood poring out. She cut till it was but little pieces. She put the bloody pieces of her former master into a large metal tin and took them out to his starving dogs. She threw the pieces in the dogs fought for the dead mans meat; his bones; his flesh. She laughed again. “You will never hurt me again.”

The women looked at her new home. It was an old plantation the walls have long lost their white clean look. The paint peeled from the sides and as she sat there more fell. The windows were covered with black curtains keeping anyone from seeing the inside. The door creaked as she opened it and the room had a dusty smell to it. She thought it was perfect when she first sow it. She was a writer and hoped to get ideas from her new home. She went back out and grabbed her stuff and called to Anna. Anna was her step daughter she adopted when she marred Anna’s father. Much to the woman’s anger when the father died Anna was placed in her care. Anna fallowed her step mom into the house the whole time having a feeling of someone watching her. Her step mom led Anna to her room. It was a small room barely big enough for a bed and a dresser. It had one window but the window had bars on it. Anna, who had learned of old southern homes, knew that this was the smallest room and was given to the favorite slave of the master during the slave times. Her step mom thought it would be the perfect room for her step daughter and left her there to unpack. As Anna started to fix the dinner her step mom was writing like a crazy woman. Her step mom had a story suddenly pop into her head about a slave killing her master. Anna was just sitting the table when her mom came down. “What did you make me tonight Anna?” her step mom asked in disgust.
“I made you a stake with a nice garden salad.” Anna answered quietly. Her step mom took a bite of the stake and spat it back onto the plate.
“This stake is to well done. Make me another.” She demanded glaring at her unwanted step daughter.
Anna fidgeted a little before replying, “That’s the only stake we had mother.”
“Don’t call me mother!” her step mom shouted, “I am not your mother. If there is no more stakes make me something else and make sure it is quick. I want to see food on this table at 8.”
“But…”
“Don’t you ‘but’ me get going.” Anna ran into the back room crying. She sat on the kitchen floor not sure what to do. She looked up and almost screamed. Standing in front of her was a young black girl around her age. She wore an old blue dress that looked dirty and worn down. “What’s wrong,” the girl asked her with a slight tilt of the head. Anna took a deep breath and tried to hide the tears.
“It’s nothing really, my step mom wants me to make her something to eat by 8 but that’s only an hour away and there is nothing in the house.” The girl nodded her head like she understood and then started to walk around the kitchen. She started to pull things off the shelves that were not there before and started to make a meal. “You know you look like a smart young girl,” the stranger said and she worked, “you don’t seem like one who would find herself enslaved.”
“I’m not enslaved.” Anna said quickly and quietly. She liked the girl helping her but she did not think she was enslaved. “It’s just my step mom is busy and can’t do a lot of the stuff and needs help.”
“She may need help but that does not mean she can treat you like a slave. Giving you a slave room, making you cook, then sending you back to make something else, screaming at you.” The more the girl talked the angrier Anna got.
“But what can I do? I’m just a kid.” The stranger held up a veil containing a green liquid.
“We make sure they can’t hurt us anymore.” The girl said with an evil smile. Anna smiled back at her and took the green liquid adding it to her step mom’s dinner.
“Ma’m dinner is served.” Anna called out. Her step mom came back in.
“What did you make this time.” Her step mom asked not giving Anna a second look.
“It’s soup.” Anna replied. Watching as her step mom ate the soup till there was nothing left. Laughing to herself. Never again will she take another order. Never again would her step mom raise her voice to her. Her step mom looked at her after she was done dabbing her small mouth with a white napkin.
“That was good, most likely the best dinner you ever made. Now clean the kitchen and tomorrow you can start opening up this house.” Her step mom said and then stopped talking. She started to make gasping sounds and grabbed her throat. Anna sat watching as her step mom slowly died gargling for breath.
A week later a town mayor came up to the old main slave plantation to great the new people who moved in. He had been so busy they had slipped his mind. A young girl answered the door. Her eyes were sunk in and her skin was pale. She looked almost near death. The mayor stumbled slightly, “Is your mother home.”
“She will never hurt me. She will never tell me what to do again.” The girl kept repeating over and over again, laughing. The mayor pushed past the girl calling into the great mansion. He walked into the dinning room and saw a decomposing body sitting at the table. He turned to face the girl but she wasn’t there. He called people up to help him move the body out. The girl’s body was found in a river a couple days later a smile plastered on her face. She was buried in the local cemetery next to a tombstone with the saying, “he will never hurt me again,” written on it.
