I remember drifting off in the sea
On a plank, and warm welcoming
Hands picking me up. The next
Thing I know, I am in a stranger’s
Home. Everything changes
From that day and I seem to
Forget what happened before
I was drifting on a plank.

“Amu!” Midori called from downstairs. “Breakfast is ready!”
Amu could also hear Ami downstairs chanting, “Breakfast! Breakfast! Nothing’s better than breakfast!” Amu let out a heaving sigh, and went into the bathroom. There, she changed and cleaned up a bit, ready for breakfast. Midori Hinamori always wanted everybody to be neat and cleaned when eating breakfast. She thought that if you’re the opposite of that, your appearance might ruin one’s appetite. This is kind of true…depending on how horrible your appearance was. And if you weren’t nice and tidy, Midori would just send you upstairs to change.
She marched downstairs and sat at a table, glancing around to see Tsumugu reading the newspaper, and Midori prompting Ami in a seat. What a regular day, Amu thought, rolling her eyes. It was then until her mother Midori sat down next to her, and suddenly asked, “Do you know anybody named Yaya, Amu?”
Amu stared at her like she was crazy. “Yaya?” She thought for a mere second, and shook her head. “Nu-uh.” She bent down to eat her syrupy pancakes. “Really?” Midori asked. Stop with the questions, please! Amu glared at her. “Yes.” She waved her fork at her. “How come you asked?” She said. Midori tapped her chin. “Well,” she began, “a girl named Yaya called us early in the morning. She stated she knew you, and that she really wanted to talk to you.”
“And what did you say?” Amu jumped in, and Midori put her hands in front of her. “Easy, easy.” She tapped her chin again, thinking. “I said you didn’t know her, and politely hung up.” She replied. Politely? Amu gave her another look as if she was crazy. “I think I should call her back. But not right now.” She began to wharf down the rest of her food, and drank her orange juice.
Amu was dancing and singing around in her room. “Secret Purincessu…” She echoed back, as the CD player’s music filled the air. She was soon interrupted by a phone ringing. She stopped the music with annoyance, and sauntered downstairs. Mom and dad must be too busy to even hear the phone…and Ami must be doing…well, whatever crazy activity she usually does. She thought. She reached the phone, and answered it. “Mushi mushi?”
“Amu-chan! Is that you? It’s—“ The caller spoke.
“Yaya?” Amu blinked.
“Yes, yes! You finally remember me?”
“No. I suspected it was you because my mom told me you called earlier.”
“Haii (yes)…” The caller, or as said—Yaya—, muttered. “Are you sure you really don’t remember me?”
Amu let out a huge sigh and spoke directly, “No. I don’t. Why do you keep calling me? Are you some kind of stalker, or something?” There was a surprising cracking sound, and then Yaya hung up. Amu hmphed. “Figures,” she muttered, and returned back to her room to practice her singing and dancing once again.
-

Yaya sighed and pouted. “How come she doesn’t remember me?” She whispered to herself. “We were friends…Vocaloids…” She sighed again and jumped onto her bed. She stared up at the ceiling and grinned a bit. “She did think I was a stalker, right?” She sat up and clapped her hands. “If she wants a stalker, then she’ll get a stalker!” She picked up her orange and black phone, and pushed some buttons. “Oi, Ikuto?”
She waited until the other end of the line picked up, and a husky male voice answered, “Yo.” “Yo?" Yaya rolled her eyes. “I got a little task for you. Think you can handle it?” She asked.
“Duh, of course,” Ikuto answered.
“Yay!” She clapped her hands. “You’re good at stalking, right?”
“I wouldn’t say I’m ‘good’ at it, but I am cat-like.”
“Remember Amu?” Yaya asked.
She could hear the hesitation of Ikuto. “Y-yes…” He finally said. “Okay, well, she forgot about me...meaning, she forgot about us! And I bet she even forgot about what a Vocaloid does!” Yaya shouted. “So you must help her remember! Stalk her around a bit, and see what’s up with her!”
Ikuto sighed at the other end of the phone. “Fine, fine. You owe me though,” and he hung up, leaving Yaya grin widely.
-

The next day, Amu went to school. At this point, she was at chorus, singing delightful songs. Amu was always the kind of type who loved to dance and sing. “Okay, let’s do a little free styled show,” their teacher announced. “Would anyone care to volunteer up here to sing in front of the whole class?” Her eyes gazed over her volunteering students, and in that group of volunteering students, was Amu. Some students were jumping, some sitting still raising their hand like Amu, and some just shouting, “Me! Me! Pick me!”
The teacher’s eyes landed on Amu. “Hinamori-san, how about you come up here?” She pointed at her, and motioned her to come up. Amu obeyed, and sauntered up to the front of the room. She turned to look at her class, their eyes pinning down at her. She gulped, and asked their teacher, “Any song?”
Her teacher nodded slightly. “Any song.”
Amu gulped again, and thought about what song to sing. As she thought, her mind seemed to be working like a computer. Gears turning, the computer—or in this case, her mind—searches up a song downloaded by numerous people, and she begins to sing the song, “Secret Princess.” She starts off softly, and began to higher her voice to her usual singing voice. The class stared in awe, unlike her teacher who thought Amu’s voice was just beautiful. Just plain beautiful, seeming like her teacher was about to cry. As Amu still continued her singing with the students watching, a boy with dark blue hair and eyes was outside watching her through the glass window. “Amu…” He whispered to himself. “Won’t be long until she reveals her true self to the world.” His blue cat ears twitched, and he jumped off to the front of the school, and simply waited at the side of the brick wall at the entrance.
When Amu finished singing, she turned to her teacher, who was wiping her eyes. “G-good job, A-amu,” she said. Amu gave her a look as if she was crazy, and sauntered back to her seat. A friend of hers named Momoko clasped Amu’s shoulders. “Oh my gosh, you’re so good at singing!” She shook her back and forth. “I hear the state finals are coming up soon! I bet the teacher would sooo pick you!”
Amu smiled nervously. “Hehe…thanks?”
Momoko winked at her. “Betsuni (Don’t mention it)! Keep up the good work, Amu-chan!” She hugged her tightly, while Amu stared at the ground with tension. I’m not really that good, am I? She thought. I’m sure there are other people like that in the world…
And there were. Sort of.
-

Hours seemed to go by quickly, and school ended. Amu was in biology, and was packing up her things. “Don’t forget tonight’s homework, class!” Their teacher shouted out to the students, as he was putting his paper and supplies in his teacher desk. Amu bowed to the teacher. “See you tomorrow,” she spoke, and sauntered away. Today was a pretty good decent day, she thought. Except that at chorus…My mind felt like a computer…I didn’t feel all that human. She stopped shortly, and stared at the ground. Nah…I must be imagining it. And she continued walking out to the school’s entrance to go home.
As she approached the entrance, the boy ran in front of her. Amu backed away. “What the—? What are you…who are you?” She asked. The boy gave her a look. “I’m Ikuto, do you not remember?” He came closer to her until they were face-to-face. Amu blushed deeply. “N-no, I do not remember who you are!” She stuttered. “And what’s with the cat ears?” She flicked his blue cat ears. “Are you some kind of neko cosplayer?”
Ikuto rubbed his cat ears. “Er, no.” He lifted her chin, and spoke softly, “Do you know what you are?” “Yes, a human!” She stormed off blushing once again, but Ikuto blocked her way. “Are you sure?” He asked. “Do you really not know what you are?”
Amu looked puzzled. “What do you mean? I’m a human. A mammal. A person.” She answered.
Ikuto sighed deeply, and looked her straight in the eyes. “You’re a Voca—“
She sighed and stepped on his foot with great force, and sauntered away. “Just get away, you creepy stalker!” She shouted, and as she thought about it, she began to run. Ikuto winced the pain, and sighed again. “This might be harder than I thought, but…” His blue cat tail twitched, and he jumped away to follow her.
-

Amu finally reached her home, and slammed the front door shut. She breathed hard from all that running, and let out a big sigh of relief. That boy…Ikuto, was it? He’s probably stalking me outside of my house. She thought.
She ran up to her room to attempt to close all of her curtains. Tell me he isn’t there, please!
When reaching her bedroom, she found Ikuto sitting on her bed. “Yo,” he greeted.
“How’d you—? B-but you were— Huh?!” Amu shouted. Ikuto smirked, and pointed at her screen door leading to the porch. “It was open. You should really lock it,” he answered. “Anyway, I want to continue our previous conversation.”
Amu blinked, and sighed. “Fine, but will you get out of my house afterwards?” She asked. He nodded thoughtfully.
She brought up her computer chair up to him and sat down. “Fire away your idiotic questions.”
Ikuto glared at her, and thought for a moment. Finally he spoke, “You’re a Vocaloid.”
Amu stared at him for a while. “I’m a what?” She asked. “A Vocaloid,” he answered. “The original definition would be a singing synthesizer application software developed by the Yamaha Corporation that enables users to synthesize singing by just typing in lyrics and melody.” He rested his chin on the palm of his hand. “Easy.”
Amu blinked once again. “What?”
Ikuto face palmed himself. “Were you originally living in this house?” He asked. Amu thought for a moment and finally answered, “No, I was drifting on a plank in the sea, and then someone picked me up. She said her name was Midori, and she is my mother.”
He stared at her as if she was crazy for a moment. “Hold on.” He placed his hand to his blue headphones on the side of his head, and began tweaking around with the switch on it. Finally, he placed his fingers on the microphone attached to it. “Yo, Yaya,” he spoke. Amu’s eyebrows rose. “How did you—? Why are you calling her?” She asked, but Ikuto simply just ignored her.
-

Yaya was drawing a bunny on a piece of paper, when Ikuto’s voice interrupted her. She pouted, and put her delicate fingers on her microphone attached to her black and orange headphones. “Nani (what)?” She said into the microphone. “I’m trying to draw a bunny here!”
“I have Amu here,” Ikuto spoke at the other end of the line. “And stop fooling around!”
Yaya blew a piece of her hair out of face. “Okay…How about you bring her over here? We need to refresh her memory. Oh, and by the way,” she answered, “I’m not fooling around! This is what I usually do when I’m bored, duh!”
Ikuto rolled his blue eyes. “You’re so eccentric,” he said. “Alright, I’ll bring her over there,” and he ended the communication. He turned to Amu. “Let’s go.” He dragged her away from the room “What?!” Amu yelled. “Where are you taking me?” “To an old friend of yours,” he answered, annoyed.
