Fire and Ice Chapter 6
I danced around the beams of an old watch tower; my katanas parrying with the wind. How could I have lost once again? I started to pick up my footing; my anger fueling my movements. My katanas swiveled through the air making light wisps of noise. I heard wood giving out and I opened my eyes. What had I done? I tried to move but the watch tower was coming down too fast a beam came crashing towards me and my world went black.
I woke up later to find a young samurai next to me. He had a pilot’s cap on and goggles and he had grease smudged on his face.
“Are you alright?” he asked his voice cheerful. I blinked not quite remembering what had happened. I looked around and recognized the shack that our group rested in. I sat up remembering my stupidity earlier and the wooden beam that had almost killed me. When I thought about it more it should have killed me. I looked at the samurai and noticed his orange hair poking out of his pilot’s cap.
“You saved me.” I mumbled trying to make sense of my own words. He scratched his head.
“I’d like to say I did but then I’d be lying.” He chortled I blinked. If he hadn’t saved me then who had. Who could have saved me?
“I did.” A husky voice muttered my eyes darted to a figure in red and black. No it couldn’t be. It was Kyuzo I let a growl escape my throat. I reached for my katanas but they weren’t at my waist. Kyuzo’s dark eyes seemed amused.
“We thought you might react that way.” Gorebei muttered I glared at him. A smile spread across his lips.
“What is he doing here?!” I snarled Kyuzo continued to stare at me with a meek interest. Kambei sighed and stood up.
“He’s agreed to join us.” Kambei uttered I clenched my hands into fists. “So that we may battle him again.” I glared at Kyuzo with pure hatred.
“And what of Ayamoru?” I growled my glare intensifying. “Did you kill him too?!” Kyuzo closed his eyes for a brief second then glanced at me.
“He was murdered by his own son.” He sighed I stood there dumbfounded. His own son had killed him? Surely that hadn’t been on Kyuzo’s watch, I’d seen him fight before and I’d never seen him lose. I shook my head trying to clear away the tiny bit of sympathy that I’d had for his loss. I turned to Gorebei.
“I want my katanas back.” I grumbled he gave a hesitant smile.
“Kambei asked me to hold on to them until you cool down.” He explained I glared at Kambei. “Oh, also Amara this is our other new recruit, Heihachi-dono.” I looked back at the young samurai with the pilot’s cap. He seemed nice enough. I sighed and went to my small quarters hoping to sleep.
I watched Amara go and felt a small bit of sympathy for her. This man was frustrating with his lack of words and emotions. It scared me to know that he’d killed one of Amara’s allies. “Sister, I’m scared.” She whispered I put my arm around her knowing like everyone else here that there wasn’t much time before the rice bent. Katsushiro was glaring at Kyuzo his hand resting on his katana but Kyuzo didn’t seem phased.
“Kambei, we need to be heading back to the village.” I muttered he nodded.
“But first I wish to retrieve a long lost friend.” He mumbled Kikichiyo laughed.
“And how ancient is this samurai, Old Man?!” he laughed I rolled my eyes. His jokes about Kambei’s age were starting to anger me. I respected Kambei dearly and didn’t want him to disrupt that. Kambei glanced at him.
“Well we do need 7 samurai so we must go and retrieve my dear friend.” Kambei murmured in a fixed tone, Kikichiyo let out a puff of steam.
“What are you saying old man?!” he grumbled. “You have 7 samurai.” Kambei chuckled and I saw Gorebei smirk.
“No we have six: Gorebei, Kyuzo, Heihachi, Amara, Katsushiro and I.” Kikichiyo jumped to his feet.
“What about me! I’m a samurai as well!” he stammered Kambei looked at him with daring brown eyes. “Look right here! It even says so right here!” he yelled pulling a scroll from a fold in his shirt. He unrolled it on the ground and pointed to his name. Kambei and Gorebei inspected it thoroughly and Gorebei began to laugh. “What?!” Kikichiyo yelped Kambei smiled and I felt a surge of joy.
“Oh nothing it just says that you’re thirteen.” Gorebei explained Kikichiyo growled in frustration as he snatched the scroll away from everyone’s eyes. I giggled in spite of myself and noticed that Kyuzo had retired.
