I'm really trying to hold back on my opinion of Obama.

I'm trying to remember that it's only been a few months, and he's had a lot to deal with.

But it's become extremely hard for me to support Obama at all, after he chooses to support something as disgusting as DOMA. Before he was elected, he stated he was strongly against it. Now though, all of a sudden, his Justice Department releases a brief defending it. Just to summarize a few points of this brief:

Quote:
the traditional definition of marriage effects no "invidious discrimination"

Quote:

DOMA, understood for what it actually does, infringes on no one's rights, and in all events it infringes on no right that has been constitutionally protected as fundamental

Quote:
Section 3 of DOMA does not distinguish among persons of different sexual orientations, but rather it limits federal benefits to those who have entered into the traditional form of marriage

Quote:
DOMA does not seek in any way to advance the "supremacy" of men over women, or of women over men. Thus DOMA cannot be "traced to a . . . purpose" to discriminate against either men or women.

Really? Defining marriage as between one man and woman, effectively denying essential rights for a tax-paying minority, is not discrimination?
Apparently to Obama, gay people aren't discriminated against because we do have the right to marry - the opposite sex. Really, Obama? Did you quote that directly from Rick Warren?

Obviously this thing doesn't discriminate against men over women, or women over men. Does Obama think anyone is convinced by that rhetoric? It does, however, advance the supremacy of straight people over gay people. Hello discrimination!

I love how he mentions status quos as evidence for DOMA - I thought this was the administration of a President who stressed the importance of change?

It's true that a lot of people are gay-hating and the country is not ready for gay marriage... just as the country was not ready for interracial marriage or black civil rights in the 1950s. That's exactly why we have governments, to protect the rights of the oppressed minority - otherwise it's mob rule.

But I guess "separate but equal" is alive and well. Although we haven't even achieved "equal" in most jurisdictions.
