"Don't rely on me, for I will only let you down."
She sighed, pale face cool against the dull shine
of the polished wooden floor.
Rolling over from her side to lie on her stomach,
she banished the few rebellious strands of smooth,
dark chocolate hair; only to have them fall back
across her face as she raised her head sadly.
It was eleven past one in the morning.
Why she was even awake at this hour she did
not care to think. All that passed through her
mind were his words, soft and apologetic as he had
stared at the bare ground.
She wished so vainly that he had looked to her;
if only to see his eyes one last time.
But oh, those eyes.
Whenever he had smiled at her, she had seen them
sparkle with the light of a thousand stars as though
they, and only they, were the night sky; for that
was how his eyes were.
That blue almost black, streaked with slivers of
golden silver, twinkling mysteriously.
When he had been down... oh, it was as though his
gorgeous eyes would melt they shone so beautifully;
that point where the tears could almost be seen.
It had been those times she wanted to hold him,
and he her forever and never let go, if only to
comfort him.
"Don't rely on me, for I will only let you down."
She released a broken sob, no longer holding back
the tears her pained brown eyes had clung to so
strongly.
"I promised I would never let you cry, and by leaving I will
hurt you less than I am now. I'll never let you down again."
But he'd broken his promise and let her down by leaving.
"But I love you." she had cried; her voice quiet
and halting in the still night's silence.
He had turned away already, a single tear
plunging to the earth, quickly absorbed in the ground
by his feet.
"And I you."
She stood up, walking numbly to the doors that opened
to the balconey.
Resting her burning forehead to the icy glass, her
eyes caught sight of the christmas lights through
the haze of tears welling up.
"Just like his eyes..." she murmured and turned away,
forcing her leaden feet to run to her room; to avert her
eyes from all the memories.
"But I love you."
She had been fighting back the tears then just as she had before.
"And I you."
But he had walked off into the night, the city lights
blinking about him; mirroring the sky.
"...I'll never let you down again."
"And yet you have, and still are."
she whispered into her dampened pillow, dreaming
of stars and broken promises.
