I was greeted by a pitch-black place when I opened my eyes. Blinking once I took two steps forward… It was then that I realized that, for whatever reason, my leg was completely healed as well as the rest of my body.
‘Where am I?’ I took another step into the darkness. Whatever this place was, it was definitely nothing like anything I’d seen, heard of, or been to in my entire life. Quite literally, this place was nothingness.
Then I saw it. The light.
I dashed towards the new light; I was eager to see what was ahead. Perhaps it’d be something to explain where I was. The lighted area was a place of nothingness too, but it soothed me. I felt safer there, even if there was still nothing. But I was wrong…there was something.
I froze as a figure began to approach me… A woman. As she came closer to me I saw that she was wearing a light blue, shapeless gown and was barefoot. Her long brown hair was worn down and stopped inches below her waist, her peach skin was flawless; she had no wrinkles or scars. When she stopped in front of me she smiled, and as she did her beautiful, deep emerald eyes twinkled.
It looked like her, but there was no way it could possibly be…
“Mom?” I managed to choke out.
“Nyatta.” Her voice was calm but happy and reminded me of the soft chime of bells; I never thought someone’s voice could sound so beautiful. She gently pulled me into a hug. “Your father and I have missed you terribly. It’s so good to see you again, after all of these years.”
I don’t know how, but I worked through some of the shock enough to let myself hug back. “I missed you too, Mom. But, uh..” I was beginning to fumble with my words. “Where are we?”
Mom giggled softly while keeping me close in her arms and I stayed still, close to her. With Mom around everything felt safer, nothing could hurt me. Because I knew that she loved me and would die to protect me. Young as I was, I knew that there was no love stronger in the world than that of the love of a true mother’s for her child.
“We’re just by the gates of Heaven,” she told me.
My eyes widened. “H-Heaven?” But that meant… “…I’m dead?”
This time Mom frowned. “Yes. That kunoichi was sent to kill you, Nyatta. She succeeded.”
“But…wait.” This was confusing, everything was becoming too much to comprehend. “We’re by the gates of Heaven, but why are you here?”
“When a human dies,” Mom began her explanation while moving a stray strand of my hair out of my face and tucking it behind my ear, “The person who they love most that is deceased is sent to deliver them there.”
“So... You’re supposed to bring me to Heaven?”
“That’s right.” Mom clasped her hands in mine, a smile on her face again. “I’ve missed you so much. Your father’s missed you too, and so has the rest of our clan. We’ve all missed you, Nyatta.”
This was the moment I’d been waiting for forever since I was left alone; to see my mom and dad again. Now it was here and I didn’t know what to do… I was lost. Just like that wretched day when they were killed – they were all killed – and I was left to fend for myself. Right then and there I was that same lost child. I really, really wanted to go to Heaven and live with Mom, Dad, and the rest of our clan again. But at the same time, there was a part inside of me that didn’t want to let go.
“I’m sorry, Mom.” I looked down in shame. “I love you, and Dad, and everyone else. I always will, but-“
She lifted my chin with her right hand. “You don’t want to go, do you?” The smile that she wore before was still present.
“H…how did you know?”
“I had a feeling that you might feel this way.”
“I just…” I sighed. “I love everyone else in Konoha, too. I love Naruto-kun, I love Lee-kun, I love Saga-chan and Marashi-kun, I love Tokai-kun and Rinji-chan, I love Kakashi-sensei and Gai-sensei…” Everything was beginning to make me feel even more overwhelmed; the fact that I was dead, that Misura was a kunoichi sent to kill me all along, and most of all, the decision that I was being faced with. The tears came almost instantly. I let out a soft whimper, then fell apart in my mother’s arms.
“Sh..it’s ok.” Once again she wrapped her arms around me and held me. “I understand.” Mom looked into my eyes and hers didn’t show that she felt differently. “I love you more than anything in the world, and I would love to have you back. But your happiness comes before my wants.” She wiped my tears.
“Are you sure?” I sniffled as my crying began to wind down.
“Absolutely. When that time does come for us to be together, it’ll be the best of all. Until then, your father and I will be waiting and watching over you.” Mom grinned.
“Thanks, Mom…” I hugged her tightly, and she hugged back. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Nyatta. Are you ready?”
“W-wait! How am I going to get back?” I let out another sigh. “I’m scared that I might get lost…”
“You won’t get lost.” Mom gave my forehead a light peck. “I’ll guide you back. Here. Let me be your light…”
The light in our area began to get brighter and brighter until I couldn’t see anymore… And that was the last thing I remembered.
