Laying on my back
Staring at the ceiling
Years ago
I was daddy’s little girl
Who fell off her bike and scratched up her knees
He held me in his arms and whispered
That it was going to be okay
I was eight
When I was no longer
That little girl,
I was driving down the highway
I can still hear my friends laughing beside me
And then all that was left was a bright light
And when I awoke
I was lying in a hospital bed
I was sixteen
I’m walking across the stage
Camera’s are flashing
People are smiling
I have my diploma in my hand
Hats fly in the air
Tears fall,
I was eighteen
College bound
I hit the books, studied hard
My dreams of becoming a doctor held pressure
I made mistakes
Spring break, I visited home.
My daddy held me in his arms
And whispered it was going to be okay
I was twenty-one
Next thing I knew
I was walking down the aisle
A beautiful white dress was my attire
The man standing at the end
Was my forever love
I was twenty four
Barely two years later
The hospital smell filled my lungs
This time tears of joy stream down my face
A beautiful baby girl is crying in my arms
I look up into the eyes of the man I married
And smile
I was twenty six
Time flew by
My children grew
And moved out on their own
Grey hairs began to color my brown locks
Wrinkles caused by work and kids covered my face
And the boy of my dreams turned into
The man I loved
I was fifty-seven
The fatal news was being voiced over the phone
‘One year to live’
Were the only words I could hear
These words repeated in my ear
And my daddy was no longer around
To hold me and tell me it was going to be okay
Instead my forever love kissed my cheek
And spoke the words my daddy often did
I was eighty one
After twelve months of pain and tears
My children gathered around my bed
My husband of fifty-eight years squeezed my hand lightly
I looked over all of the tear stained faces before looking up at the ceiling
I lay on my back
Inhaled slowly
Closed my eyes
And exhaled my last breath
I was eighty-two
