As the horns and head wings came out something in his mind began to click into place. When he caught sight of the tail he blinked a few times. there was a name on the tip of his tongue. He jumped onto one of the desks and crouched there looking at the man he knew, yet couldn't place. He tilted his head to the side.

Background:

Von was wandering in a bad storm. Shivering and cold his ears hidden under his blue hat were pressed against his skull. His tail was wrapped around his waist clinging tightly to him. His arms, covered in goose bumps, were clinging to his torso. He looked ahead but couldn't see anything, only darkness and shadows. He shuddered and continued on; hoping to find a place to wait out what was left of the storm. He came across what seemed to be an abandoned cabin. He rushed in and as he entered he shook off the rainwater.

He looked around and noticed a bed with scarce blankets and a beaten up pillow. He was so tired and cold he stripped down and climbed into the bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Von's dreams were fast paced and fleeting. He tossed lightly in his sleep and mewled low in his throat.

When he woke up he saw someone sitting by the bed looking at him. They had golden colored hair, green eyes and a pale skin. They were wearing a white muscle shirt that had holes and dirt stains on it, a red baseball cap, an old studded collar with an unreadable name tag, and they had a set of snakebites in their lower lip. "Finally awake, I see." he said in a warm voice. "I left to look for food before that storm and come back to find you in my bed." He didn't sound mad at all to have a stranger intrude in his home. "I'm Mark. And you've been asleep for about a week. You were sick." he said Von tried to sit up but was gently pushed back down. "No, no. You stay there." said Mark as he removed his hands once Von was lying down again. Von looked up at him "I'm sorry for intruding." he said in a raspy voice. He coughed to clear his throat. When he was done coughing he tried talking again. But Mark stopped him, "It's alright. I would just like to know how you managed to avoid capture." he said.

Von blinked and asked "what do you mean capture?"
Mark raised an eyebrow and laughed "You mean you didn't notice any of the Hunters in this area?" Mark laughed.
Von just shrugged "It was too dark to see anything." he said. then he noticed he had on pajamas. "Um...How did..." he trailed off.
Mark smiled and said "Well, as I said you were asleep for a while and I couldn't just leave you naked and cold." he got up and walked over to a small closet. "You're clothes and your hat are in here." he said. Von quickly reached up at his ears to cover them and his face paled. Mark let out a small chuckle. "No need to try and hide what you are in here," he said "I'm also a Neko." he said reaching up and taking his hat off. Revealing two fuzzy, gold colored ears. Von looked down at Mark's waist.
"Where's your tail?" he asked. Mark shrugged and said "I've had to make sacrifices to survive as long as I have out here."

A few days later Von was able to get out of the bed and walk around. The first thing he did was to take a bath. He found out that while he'd been asleep Mark had washed him off with a rag. Von had blushed when he'd found out. Mark, it turns out, had been living in the cabin for nearly three years undetected. He'd welcomed Von like a long-lost brother.

In the two months Von had stayed there, Mark and Von had learned a lot about each other. Mark liked To draw various pieces of art and sell them in the city under a fake name. He was quiet famous even thought no one knew what he really looked like. Mark also had a passion for cooking and a flare for creating new and exciting dishes. Some looked bad but when you tasted it you wanted more. Mark had another talent that he wouldn't show Von. He couldn't understand why Mark wouldn't show him but every time he'd go to ask about it Mark would change the subject. Von let it slide.

On most days Von and Mark would go into the woods and gather food, Mark refused to take Von into the nearby city. He said it was dangerous. And that 'An evil beyond imagining' resided in the city. Von shuddered every time Mark went on that topic, describing the "Evil" in such gruesome details. Mark would see the results his tales had on Von and would apologize and immediately make-up for it.

One night as Von was sleeping on the bed that he and Mark shared, he was awakened by a banging on the cabin's door. He immediately ran the spot that Mark had showed him and crawled under the floor boards. Mark had left earlier to sell some art in the city. What Von saw were men in white suits and masks searching the cabin. They found the bed and felt the warmth left from when Von had laid there moments before. One of them pulled out a flashlight and shined it on the floorboards. Von ducked and crouched close to the ground. The other five men began turning things over and searching everything. They found the clothes in the closet and Von's blue hat. After about twenty minutes of searching the six men went outside. Von waited all night under the floor. The next morning when Mark returned, Von waited for the safety word. "Fishcakes." said Mark as he stood looking at the damage. Von came from hiding and went to mark.

"Oh my god! Mark! What did they do to you?!" he asked as he ran over to Mark and saw Cuts, gashes and bruises on him. Mark fell to his knees and Von caught him and lowered him gently to the ground. "Mark," said Von in a worried tone. "Mark, answer me. It's me Von, come on Mark." he held Mark close to him and wept. Mark whispered lowly as he lost strength "They ambushed me." He began. "They took me and they tried to make me tell them about the other Nekos. I couldn't stop them, Von" his voice was shaking with the feelings that were welled up inside him. "They used a truth serum, designed by that, that Monster." for a few minutes they were both silent. Von just kept holding Mark and rocking back and forth. Mark began talking again. "I'm sorry you had to be involved, Von. You have to get out of here before they come back." Von shook his head and tears rolled down his cheeks.

"I can't leave you!" He said as he let out a sob. "Is there a safe place I can take you?" he was shaking and sobbing uncontrollably.
Mark just shook his head weakly. "No, Von. You have to run. Hide in the outskirts of the city. Take my collar it'll keep you safe. People will think you belong to someone. I'm dyeing, Von. Please. Please be safe." he coughed and it was a horrible thing, that shook him violently. Von clung to him sobbing and talking to Mark About nothing as the Golden Neko passed into the afterlife.

Von stayed there and wept holding Mark close even after the body was cold and stiff. When finally his tears rand dry Von carried Marks body to his favorite spot and buried his body covering the grave with rocks to keep wild dogs from digging it up. Von watched over the grave for a few hours then, putting Mark's studded collar around hi neck, Von walked towards the area of the city where Mark had told him about.

When Von got to the city, it was well passed midnight and he could feel an Aura about the city. He shivered remembering what Mark would say about the "Evil" that resided here. He found an abandonded mansion. The weather worn mailbox said "Benson" on the side. Von snuck into the home, and he looked around. In the den there was an ancient sofa, a victrola, and lots of dust. He wandered to the kitchen and found a moldy, half-eaten loaf of French bread. He cringed in disgust and moved onto the next room, the dinning room. There was a cracked oak table and four chairs, all covered in spider webs. Von went to the hallway and saw the stairs. He carefully made his way upstairs. Here was a long hallway with four doors on either side. And a door at the end of the hall. He started on the left side of the hall. The first room was a bathroom, not much in there but a broken mirror, and old tub with clawed feet, a grey, porcelain sink. The second room was a closet, old hangers, a small box with a bow on top. The third room was a bedroom. In here was a bed frame, an old dresser, a vanity with a stool, and a bowl and pitcher on a small table. Von moved onto the last room on the left side. It seemed to be a child's playroom. There were small broken toys, a child's desk with crayons and bleached paper on it. Von stepped into the room and felt an odd sensation. But before he could place it, it flew away. He walked out of the room and began looking in the rooms on the right side. Starting near the end of the hall and moving towards the stairs. He was leaving the room at the end of the hall for last. In the first room on the right he found another bedroom. It seemed to belong to a male in his teens. There was a bed with dirty blue pillows, and a dirty blue comforter. A dresser closet, whose door was opened wide, inside was a noose. Von didn't look around in that room much he quickly pulled the door shut and kept his hand on the knob. He was panting. After he calmed down he moved onto the next room. In here was a rocking chair and a baby crib which was covered by a net hanging from the ceiling. Von moved the the third room and in there he found another bathroom. This one was much different, there was only a toilet and a shower in this room. Von then went onto the last room on the right near the stairs. In this room were many paintings and sculptures, some looked familiar, But he couldn't remember exactly why. Von left this room and was looking down the last door. he walked up to it and noticed intricate carvings and written in Vladimir Script were the words "Let No Evil Enter" it was in Latin, But Von understood it as if it were in plain English. Von turned the crystal handle and slowly pushed the door open. In here was, without a doubt, the master bedroom. As Von passed into this room he felt an odd shudder run down his spine. He looked around and saw a king sized oak bed with spiraled posts and a Red velvet canopy. The drapes hanging down were also red velvet. The blanket on the bed was black silk and seemed brand new, Von thought this odd considering the condition of the rest of the house. The pillows, too, were new and were black satin with a red rose sewn on the middle. There was a Vanity with red lace draping down the side and a small stool covered with red lace as well. He walked to the closet and there hanging on clean and shiny hangers were clothes that seemed to belong to a Prince. Von took out an outfit, The shirt was white silk with a blue vest stitched with gold thread, A white poufy cravat, And folded neatly hanging on a conjoined hanger were black pants that seemed to be tailor made and very expensive. Von ran his hand along the material and it was as smooth and soft as satin.

Von put the outfit back and closed the closet. He was tired and weary from all the walking he'd done today. Without a second thought Von climbed under the blankets, curled in the pillows and fell asleep. When Von woke up he noticed a tray of food next to the bed, it was still steaming. The main course were two eggs prepared sunny side up, Ham cooked so perfectly it seemed to melt off the bone, and two slices of toast with melted butter and strawberry jam. Next to the plate was a glass of orange juice with no pulp. Von ate the food, too hungry to bother thinking about how it got there. Lying on the foot of the bed was the outfit Von had seen last night, neatly pressed and ready to be worn. Von looked around curious as to who (or what) was doing all this.

Von woke up a few days later and found that all the fancy clothes had been switched for jeans, T-shirts, and the shoes were exchanged for sneakers. Von giggled, ‘I guess staying in my old clothes gave it the hint that those clothes were too fancy.’ He thought. He looked and there next to the bed was his breakfast. Scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and grits. Von smiled and as he had done every time a meal appeared He said out loud in a clear voice “Thank you very much” and just like every time he said that the room rumbled with what seemed to be a type of purr.

When Von was dressed, he put on a hat and left the Benson Place, deciding to go for a walk and get acquainted with the city.
