ponderous ponderances

i was watching aeon flux the other day. something about this particular scene really got my attention. the scene where aeon finds travor the second time and they have their little encounter. it seems like the message "love conquers all" is just about the most prevailant thing there.

which makes me think...this girl has a gun to this dude's head. this dude is responsible for killing this girl's lover. somehow, there's some kind of romantic connection between them that's reinforced by the movie's underlying plot motivation. what really are we saying here?

it looks like to me that the situation is clearly constructed to show the connection between the man and the woman. that invisible bond that only 2 lovers share reaches across time and science to bring them back together in the most climactic way possible. she was sent to assasinate him. she wants to kill him. when she meets him, she is overwhelm by some sense of tragic romance.

if you ask me, this sounds like some remnants of ancient porn. imagine in the days of theater when modesty was at its highest and play writers could only allude to the hot sex that goes on behind the curtain. how would they do it? they would set up these impossible romantic situations and keep the audience on the edge of their seats wondering if the pair, so tragically connected, would ever actually get it on. then they would end the scene with enuf insinuation to give the audience their answer. "yes, they're going to ********. its going to be hot."

is that all romance really is? some overly contrived source of sexuality that manifests itself emotionally?. when we spend our time dreaming about one another, are we masturbating this "evolved" nature of sex?

love is not the instant sprouting of a seed into a redwood. love is two redwoods, sprouting side by side, growing together, working together, sharing the sun, soil, and air. love is the fruit that two trees create from cross pollination.

and here we have it. the hair splitting definition that separates a charming boy and girl that are attracted to each other and two people that grow through life together.

that's really all it ever was, wasn't it? these outlandish claims of "love at first sight" being no more than intrigue feeding sex drive. i believe, in order to purify this concept that makes life worth living, we must separate the hormonal from the spiritual and realize that sex is not something that happens between two lovers anymore. maybe it once was the case, but sex has become a commodity that is measured just as economically as money. love, i am proud to say, is still just as priceless, elusive, and treasured as it ever was.
