Halloween 2008

"Jazzabelle." whispered Cordell in her ear.

"Cor, for the millionth time, it's Jazz." she said exasperatedly.

"You know I have to call you by your full name now." said Cordell glumly.

"Yeah, yeah. You got promoted early. I know." Jazz rolled her eyes. She tried not to let it show but she was painfully jealous of her friend. Cordell had the right connections and was now part of Don Kuro's private guard. Jazz still had to wait fifty years for hers, and it was doubtful that it would even come. She was an orphan, and a mercenary.

"Ixxie's not particularly pleased." Cordell mumbled. Ixchel, Cordell's twin sister was being sent to the Assassin's camp, a job of less repute than that of Cordell's. "She got her first assignment today."

"Really?" Jazz said, curious. "Who's the poor sap?"

"Ian of Barton. He's been causing much trouble and chaos in Gaia, so they want to take him out."

Jazz's heart sank. Damian, Ian to the rest of the world, was her good friend and her secret love. A good man, although a bit spastic at times.

"Ahh." was all she said.

"Listen, I have to go, Jazzabelle. They're summoning me. Good luck. Leshem lavisqua, Belle."

"Leshem lavisquaim." Jazz replied.

She got up hastily after Cordell had left. She had to warn Ian. Hide him. Protect him. It was mutiny and treason in the worst form possible, but her love for her friend exceeded her pride in her race.

"Oy, Laiir." she called. "Lemme borrow your bike?" she pouted her lips and blinked several times.

"Sure, Jazz!" he said, and threw his motorcycle keys at her.

She kicked her friend's bike into gear and sped off to Barton.

'What are you going to do Jazz?! This is treason. Where will you go?' She had a cave close to Barton that the Gang knew nothing about.

She braked abruptly and practically threw the bike away from her.

"Damien!" she shouted "Damien! Rufus!"

The door opened quickly.

"What's wrong, Jazz?" Ian asked, his face pale.

"The Gang. They have the Assassins after you. We need to leave. Now." Ian's face contorted in horror. Jazz grabbed his arm without thinking and practically drug him to the bike.

"Ahh, Jazzabelle. You must have heard the edict and come to collect the head," said Ixchel's soft accented voice. Ian cowered slightly and Jazz turned to face Cordell's sister.

"No, Ixxie." she replied, damning her friend to hell. "I'm here to save him from you." Ixchel laughed.

"Come now. I'll let you claim him. Just kill him and be done with it."

"I'm not kidding, Ixchel." she said. "He's my friend and I will not let you harm him." Ixchel glared at Jazz, her golden eyes flashing.

"So it is to be treason and treachery?" she said. "I understand your love for your friends, but this man must be taken care of." The high elf raised her pistol and aimed it at Ian's head.

"Jazzabelle!" cried Ian hysterically. Rufus hissed behind him.

"Say goodbye, Jazzabelle." said Ixchel. Jazz clenched her fists, her blood boiling.

A shot rang out. Ixchel, glanced over at her onetime friend, blood pouring from her mouth. Tears streamed down Jazz's cheeks.

"Goodbye, Ixxie."

The high elf fell to the ground, no longer breathing.

Jazz grabbed Ian and he got on the bike behind her, his eyes unseeing.

She rode out to the cave.

"Stay here until I come for you." she said "I will make it safe for you, Ian, I promise." She hugged him tightly and kissed his forehead.
