Day Before New Year's
Today is December 31st, the last day of 2008 for the REST OF HISTORY. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever again will we experience 2008. 2008 is dead. It's dying. And the most brilliant thing about it, and I'm not orchestrating this, is that my Nepenthe is shedding today.

Is there anything more symbolic of regeneration, rebirth, and reincarnation than a snake shedding? Let me first tell you a little about Nepenthe.

1) She is a California kingsnake, and I've only had her since August. Only five months, and, while I don't know how old she was when I bought her, I can do a rough guestimate. She's grown maybe an inch, maybe two. I'll call her eight or nine months old. She's a baby. And utterly precious.

2) "Nepenthe" is from Greek mythology. The ancient Greeks believed that nepenthe was something which would make you forget sorrows. A drug of forgetfulness. It paired up with the Lethe River, the water of which would also make you forget. I named her Nepenthe because she brought happiness, as well as responsibility, to me.

Well. I was going to say something about the New Year.

My mom always had a saying, which I've adopted because I like it so much. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Remember that.
