innocence and angel wings
part 4
[still Renae's POV]
"Jason?! What are you doing here?!" I heard my mother shout, right after I sat down to wait. "Roxane?!" I heard another voice ask. "I'm here to pick Rachael up from school. What the hell are you doing here?!" the masculine voice shouted back. "Looks like Dad sobered up for once. Guess this means I don't have to walk home today," Rachael mumbled from the doorway. "I'm here to pick Renae up from school. I had no idea you were here," my mom yelled, saying the word "you" in a venomous tone. I wondered what could have happened between them that made her seem to hate this guy. He wasn't one of her "friends" that I'd seen her associate with, I could tell. Even with the "friends" she couldn't stand, she'd always kept her tone polite. Especially in public. This was unusual for her to do. I heard Rachael sigh quietly and walk over to them. How could that girl be so calm as she watched that happening? "Dad?" she asked the red-haired man my mom had addressed as "Jason" earlier, as I walked over to my mother's side. "Rachael," he said as he pulled her into his side in a hug, "you ready for a big surprise?" She looked up at him warily, yet curiosity still evident in her eyes. Her father let out a sigh. "Rachael, meet your mother and your twin sister, Renae," he said, turning her so she was facing us. "What?!" we both shouted in unison. Rachael turned to look at her father, shock and confusion playing on her features. "What do you mean "my mother"?! You told me when I was five years old that she was dead! That she died after giving birth to me! And now you tell me that this woman," she pointed towards my mother, "is my mom?! And that i have a twin sister?!" she pointed at me this time, "Why did you lie to me for almost eleven years then?" We all looked at the man, Jason, for an answer. "Well," he began. "I wanted to protect you. You see, your mother is--" "Tell her the truth, Jason," my mother said through clenched teeth, cutting him off mid-sentence. He let out another sigh. "You see, Rachael. The thing is, your mother and I...well..." he trailed off. "Your father and I had an agreement, Rachael," my mother continued for him. "You see, your father and I weren't married when the two of you were born. After your births, we decided to go our separate ways. But we both knew I couldn't raise both of you on my own. So we made an agreement." I looked up at my mother. "What kind of "agreement" was it?" I asked, putting air quotes around "agreement". "Well, we agreed that each of us would take custody of one of you two. But we also agreed never to speak to or see each other again after that. I see now that was a stupid idea," she explained. "Jason, why don't you and Rachael accompany Renae and me to our house? That way we can discuss this matter further without any interruptions or an audience," she said in her business-like tone, gesturing toward the growing clusters of curious people gathering nearby. Apparently, this little "scene" of ours had gathered a bit of attention. "Sure, why not?" Jason said. "Let's go to your place and explain everything casually." I caught a bit of a sarcasm in his tone. From the look on my mother's face, I guessed she heard it, too. I could see Rachael grimace out of the corner of my eye.
